Alan Joseph Bauer: Udder Nonsense
To get to a pre-approved outcome, the Left tends not to pay attention to large amounts of data or technical considerations. “scientific” conclusion. Enron also tried to hide its debts in order to present a positive economic picture. We all know the outcome.
Danone, the giant French yogurt company, has pushed the latest trend to use diapers and masks on cows. According to the press, pacifiers were not mentioned in any of these reports. According to the rumours, cows, which are indispensable sources for yogurt and ice-cream, emit large amounts methane forward and backward. Anyone who has been awake in the last decade knows that methane traps reflected radiation and heats up the planet more than carbon dioxide. Although past attempts to address cow flatulence included changing the feed to produce less gas, the French goal is to trap them and prevent them from being released into the atmosphere. They don’t appear hermetic. I find it interesting that the diapers are not hermetic.4 molecules. I am happy that they are using the Covid masks left over, but I also hope that the cows will be able recognize one another.
Let’s give the yogurt scientists the benefit of the doubt and say that their end-to-end solution really does trap all methane released and that the net effect will make life on this world better. Ask any serious researcher: “At what cost?” No doubt diapers are made of paper, cloth and/or other plastic materials. How do they impact the environment? They will eventually be retired and buried in ground. What environmental impact will it have on the earth if we bury millions of cow diapers and masks each year? How much energy is required to heat water to wash cloth diapers? How much will new cow fashions affect the final product’s price? People on the bottom end of the financial spectrum will be expelled from Danone yogurt market in order to make the elite feel better about the yogurt they choose.
When I was given the opportunity to conduct a study for an American aerospace company, I realized that it was important to consider all aspects of energy and environmental issues. They wanted to determine if it was possible to use algae or other biological sources as jet fuel. My work with an engineer led to the creation of models that could be used to determine initial food sources, growth efficiency, and cost of isolating fuel molecules. There were several high-profile commercial airlines that used modified palm oils or other oils for their engines. They never talked about the cost of the fuel in these flights. But from our study, we saw that the price of any jet fuel alternative from a biological source was going to be far more expensive than standard jet fuel, unless you could coax some bacteria or algae to thrive on coal—the cheapest source of carbon available. After you take into consideration the low efficiency of solar radiation being converted into carbon mass by cyanobacteria or algae, and the need to isolate fuel molecules from other cellular material and their significant modification, it is impossible to get even $4 or $5 per gallon. The estimated cost of the “natural” Boeing’s fuel cost over $50 per gallon to produce, modify, transport and transport on multiple aircraft. Even though biofuels are extremely expensive, even at $7 per gallon in California, nobody has announced any plans to switch to them, despite their being in development for more than 20 years.
My partner and me had the opportunity to visit an Israeli alga farm while we were on the project. It was run by a professional scientist and had a fantastic set up. The Israel Electric Company provided space, heat and carbon dioxide from their smoke stacks, as well as water and support staff. They also gave them equipment to handle algae. While sitting in this guy’s office, he handed me a bottle with a clear liquid in it. The official stamp on the bottle was: “100% Algal Diesel Fuel”. It is very impressive. “So how much did it cost from start to finish?” Crickets. So I again asked. He brought more crickets. It is hard to believe that a pretty liter truck fuel would cost less than $100. He couldn’t find an economically viable alternative to diesel fuel even with all the stuff he had.
There are many other stories like this. One laboratory that was very prominent succeeded in getting bacteria to consume sugar and produce octane. Now that’s impressive until you realize that at over $400 per ton for sugar and say 10% efficiency of conversion of sugar to fuel, you are still looking at double digit dollars per gallon for any such biofuel. And there’s the rub. The majority “green” If you see the whole picture, which includes the economics, systems don’t make sense. In his movie, Michael Moore proved it. Planet of the Humans He was a pioneer in the solar energy industry and spoke out about the dark side of the green business. The Left effectively ignored him. I was told by a pioneer in solar energy that Sacramento’s cancellation of financial support for his first major solar field led to the project going bankrupt. Even today, rooftop solar panels and windmill farms make little business sense when you consider all the financial and energy considerations. California recently announced it would no longer pay individuals to provide extra electricity for the grid. Many roof-top systems were installed with the expectation that excess power would be sold to cover the installation costs. They’ve been left in the dust.
The environmental aspect is often overlooked: What happens to the plates, turbine blades, and huge batteries that go into the ground? How much can you recycle? What cost? But what about the waste? What about the slavish-like African mining industry required to produce those huge EV batteries? It is the lack honesty of those who push the “green agenda” This is why most Americans buy gas cars and continue to use their gas stoves, barbecues, and grills. Americans want honesty and they don’t believe the green hucksters who always seem to be right except in practice. Islands aren’t disappearing. There is still snow around the world. Most people seem to be living in peace, though they are getting poorer because of inflation. Al Gore blasted this week’s Davos posh about a billion climate refugees. If he had said “economic” Maybe climate was more important than belief.
No matter whether a decision is made for the family or government, it must be based upon all facts. If a hybrid car’s extra cost will never cover the additional gas expense, then a prudent person probably would stick with a gas car. If those who promote EVs, windmills and solar panels want people to buy their product, they need to be open about the real costs and benefits. If they do not disclose the true costs and benefits, people will doubt their claims and be more cautious about buying their products. The Davos crowd wanted to take away their nitrogen fertilizers. Dutch farmers protested vigorously. They mobilized their tractors to fight their government’s policy that only saw one side of the equation—less fertilizer, less “warming.” They ignored the human aspect of food producers, and consumers who are looking for affordable food. Do you feel like this? Covid Lockdowns ignored the needs of people and businesses in the name supposedly of fighting the virus.
I hope those French cows will find a way for them to take off their diapers as a protest.
