65% of teenagers globally are being targeted by ‘sextortion’ – a concerning trend.

Gen Z Faces Alarming “Sextortion” Scams

According to a recent study conducted by Snap Inc. and WeProtect Global Alliance, a staggering 65% of Gen Z teenagers and young adults have fallen victim to “sextortion” scams. This eye-opening research involved surveying 6,000 teenagers across Australia, France, Germany, India, the UK, and the United States during the months of April and May.

It is important to note that these scams are not limited to Snapchat alone. The study revealed that these scams occur on various platforms, making it a widespread issue affecting the younger generation.

Disturbing Statistics

  • 31% of those who experienced the scam admitted to sharing sexual material.
  • 25% disclosed private information.
  • However, 38% reported that they did not share either.

Seeking Help and Taking Action

After falling victim to “sextortion,” 56% of the surveyed individuals or their friends sought assistance from a trusted adult, parent, or friend. Additionally, 51% reported the incident to the platform, a hotline, or law enforcement.

Furthermore, 38% took matters into their own hands by blocking the perpetrator, while 30% updated their account security and 26% went as far as closing their accounts altogether.

It is crucial to address these alarming statistics and provide support to those affected by such scams.

Fentanyl Poisoning Cases Linked to Snapchat

In a separate investigation, the Justice Department and the FBI are currently looking into cases of fentanyl poisoning that were facilitated through Snapchat. This social media platform, known for its encrypted technology and disappearing messages, has unfortunately become a preferred choice for drug dealers.

Experts in the legal field emphasize the need for increased vigilance and regulation to combat the use of social media platforms for illegal activities, particularly drug sales.
