Alaska lieutenant governor enters race for sole 2024 House seat
Alaska’s Republican Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom Challenges Incumbent Rep. Mary Peltola for House Seat
In an exciting announcement, Alaska’s Republican Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom has officially declared her candidacy for the state’s sole seat in the United States House of Representatives. She is set to go head-to-head with incumbent Rep. Mary Peltola (D-AK) in what promises to be a highly anticipated race.
“Alaska needs a proven tough fighter to stop the assault on Alaska from Joe Biden and Washington D.C. liberals,” Dahlstrom passionately stated on Tuesday.
Dahlstrom’s decision to run stems from her belief that Alaska’s conservative leaders have been at odds with the current administration on crucial resource development issues. She is determined to put an end to what she sees as a betrayal of Alaskans by D.C. politicians.
“Raising my four kids and working my way up in the private sector before giving back to serve Alaskans, I have seen how D.C. politicians betray Alaskans every day,” Dahlstrom explained. “In Congress, I will stop Biden and the extreme liberals ruining our future, bankrupting our families, killing our jobs, harming our military and veterans, and threatening our security.”
Notably, the current second-in-command of the state is also vying for the House seat, competing against Republican Nick Begich. Begich previously ran against Peltola and former Gov. Sarah Palin (R) in 2022. It’s worth mentioning that Alaska operates under an open primary system, where the top four candidates, regardless of party affiliation, advance to the general election. As of now, Peltola is the only Democrat who has announced her bid for the seat.
Peltola initially won the seat in a special election in 2022, following the passing of Rep. Don Young (R-AK) on his way back to Alaska. Young had held the seat for an impressive 49 years. Given its significance, the Alaska race is expected to be one of the most closely watched contests in 2024 and is a top priority for conservatives aiming to maintain control of the House.
“There is nearly a year to go and a lot of work ahead of us — but it’s a real honor to have this opportunity to fight for Alaska in D.C.,” expressed Elisa Rios, campaign manager for Peltola. “Mary and the Lieutenant Governor spoke earlier today, and Mary welcomed her to the race. She looks forward to discussing the issues with her this next year.”

How does Dahlstrom’s background as a former state legislator and Lieutenant Governor make her well-equipped to address pressing issues and advocate for the interests of Alaskans in Congress?
Specifically, she has expressed concern over President Joe Biden’s policies, such as the suspension of oil and gas leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, which she believes will have a detrimental impact on Alaska’s economy and hinder job growth in the state.
With her background as a former state legislator and her experience as Alaska’s Lieutenant Governor, Dahlstrom has the credentials and knowledge necessary to address these pressing issues and advocate for the interests of Alaskans in Congress. She has been a strong proponent of responsible resource development, asserting that it is essential for Alaska’s economic prosperity and the well-being of its residents.
Furthermore, Dahlstrom has been vocal about her commitment to preserving Alaska’s unique way of life and protecting the state’s rights. She firmly believes that decisions regarding Alaska’s land, resources, and future should be made by Alaskans themselves, rather than by politicians in Washington, D.C. As a Republican, she aligns with the principles of limited government, individual liberty, and free markets, which she believes are vital for Alaska’s success.
Challenging Dahlstrom is incumbent Representative Mary Peltola, a Democrat who has represented Alaska in the House of Representatives since 2018. Peltola has emphasized her support for environmental conservation and has advocated for policies aimed at combating climate change. While Peltola’s platform may resonate with some Alaskans concerned about environmental issues, Dahlstrom aims to present herself as a strong alternative who prioritizes the economic well-being of the state.
The upcoming race between Dahlstrom and Peltola is expected to be highly competitive and closely watched by political observers. Alaska’s sole seat in the House of Representatives carries significant influence, particularly on issues such as resource development, energy policy, and land management. This race will not only determine the representative for Alaska but also serve as a barometer of public sentiment regarding the current administration’s policies in the state.
As the campaign trail heats up, both candidates are expected to engage in vigorous debates, town halls, and public forums to reach out to voters and convey their respective visions for Alaska’s future. Issues such as the economy, job growth, energy, and the role of the federal government in Alaska’s affairs are likely to take center stage during the campaign.
Ultimately, the choice between Dahlstrom and Peltola will be critical for Alaskans who seek a representative that will champion their interests and ensure the continued prosperity of the state. The outcome of this race could have far-reaching implications for Alaska’s economy, its unique way of life, and its relationship with the federal government. Voters will have the opportunity to decide which candidate best represents their values and priorities when they head to the polls in the upcoming election.
