Alaska mayor’s solution for homelessness: One-way ticket to LA.
The Mayor of Anchorage Proposes a Unique Solution to Help the Homeless
The mayor of Anchorage, Alaska, is considering a bold idea to address the issue of homelessness in his city. Mayor Dave Bronson recently suggested sending homeless individuals to Los Angeles for the winter, not as a punishment, but as a way to save lives.
Last year, eight people tragically died from exposure to the harsh Alaskan winter. In response, Anchorage announced plans to convert a former shelter into an entertainment venue. However, Mayor Bronson believes that more needs to be done to protect the homeless population.
“I have a moral imperative here, and that’s to save lives,” Bronson stated. “If that means providing them with a few hundred dollars for an airline ticket to go where they want to go, then I’m willing to do that.”
The concept is still in its early stages and does not have any funding attached to it yet. Mayor Bronson emphasized that it is not the city’s business to dictate where homeless individuals should go. His primary concern is ensuring their safety and preventing deaths on Anchorage streets.
From a financial standpoint, the mayor believes that the proposal makes sense. He explained that a plane ticket to Los Angeles costs around $286, while it costs the city approximately $100 per day to house someone. Additionally, Anchorage does not have enough space in its shelters to accommodate everyone during the winter.
Controversy and Opposition
Not everyone is on board with Mayor Bronson’s idea. Christopher Constant, chair of the Anchorage Assembly, expressed his objections, stating that displacing people from their land, even if it is not their ideal home, is not a solution. He emphasized the importance of respecting the Native land and the rights of the homeless population.
Despite the controversy, Mayor Bronson remains committed to his goal of saving lives. He believes that a large, professionally managed shelter would have been a better solution, but since state lawmakers rejected the funding for it, he is exploring alternative options.
“The city has spent $161 million on homelessness, and we don’t even have a shelter,” Bronson said. “We need to find a better situation than what we have right now.”
While the proposal is still being debated, it highlights the urgent need for innovative solutions to address homelessness. Mayor Bronson’s willingness to think outside the box demonstrates his dedication to protecting the vulnerable population in Anchorage.
