Warning: Former Wikipedia Co-Founder Claims US Intelligence Controls Site for ‘Info Warfare’
Ex-Wikipedia Co-Founder Says Site Hijacked by US Intelligence for ‘Info Warfare’
In a recent interview with Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist Glenn Greenwald, Lawrence Mark Sanger, co-founder of Wikipedia, made shocking claims about the manipulation of the online encyclopedia by U.S. intelligence agencies. Sanger accused the CIA, FBI, and other intelligence agencies of using Wikipedia as a tool of control.
Sanger revealed that there is evidence dating back to 2008 of CIA and FBI computers being used to edit Wikipedia. He questioned whether this manipulation had ceased or continued over the years. These claims shed light on the alleged infiltration of Wikipedia by intelligence agencies and the perceived ideological shift on the platform.
Sanger pointed out the gradual change he observed in Wikipedia’s content, particularly in articles related to controversial topics such as global warming and certain drugs. He described an “over-the-top bias” that became more apparent between 2010 and 2015, with a clear preference for Western ideas.
By the time of the Trump administration, Sanger believed that Wikipedia’s bias had intensified, making it the most biased encyclopedia he knew of. Greenwald agreed, stating that the liberal establishment narrative aimed at countering President Donald Trump seemed to have influenced Wikipedia’s content.
Sanger expressed concern about the abandonment of Wikipedia’s original neutrality policy by its contributors, who he claimed now took cues from liberal media outlets like CNN, MSNBC, and The New York Times. He also revealed that Wikipedia had officially declared 80 percent of major right-leaning news sources as unreliable.
Both Sanger and Greenwald highlighted the weaponization of information tools and the impact it had on individuals like Greenwald himself, who had been targeted with political attacks and weaponized propaganda due to his involvement in whistleblower Edward Snowden’s release of U.S. government secrets.
Sanger recommended alternative online encyclopedias such as Ballotpedia and Conservapedia, although he acknowledged that they do not rank well on Google. He believed that Wikipedia had become a target for weaponization between 2005 and 2015, playing a central role in the online information warfare conducted by intelligence agencies.
These revelations align with findings from programming student Virgil Griffith, who first published evidence of CIA and FBI activity on Wikipedia in 2007. Griffith’s program, Wikiscanner, traced the location of computers used to edit Wikipedia articles, revealing that the CIA and FBI had edited numerous articles to remove incriminating information.
Sanger concluded that intelligence agencies either paid influential individuals or developed their own personnel within the intelligence community to manipulate Wikipedia content to their advantage.
