Alex Murdaugh loses prison phone privileges after lawyer records call for documentary.
COLUMBIA, S.C.—Convicted Murderer Alex Murdaugh Faces Consequences for Violating Prison Rules
In a surprising turn of events, Alex Murdaugh, a convicted murderer, has found himself in hot water once again. South Carolina Corrections Department officials announced on Wednesday that Murdaugh has lost his phone privileges and prison tablet computer after his lawyer recorded him reading his journal entries during a call for a documentary about his case.
According to prison policy, inmates are prohibited from speaking to the media without permission. The agency’s rationale is that “victims of crime should not have to see or hear the person who victimized them or their family member on the news,” stated Chrysti Shain, a spokesperson for the state prisons.
While these violations are considered prison discipline issues rather than crimes, they have resulted in significant consequences for Murdaugh. In addition to losing his phone privileges and prison tablet, he has also been barred from purchasing items in the prison canteen for a month.
Furthermore, Murdaugh will now need permission from prison officials to obtain another tablet, which can be used for monitored phone calls, approved entertainment, reading books, and taking video classes.
A Troubled Past
Alex Murdaugh, 55, is currently serving a life sentence without parole for the murder of his wife and younger son. Prosecutors have alleged that the disbarred attorney stole millions from his law firm and clients, and that his motive for the killings was to avoid detection and buy more time to cover up his crimes.
Despite the overwhelming evidence against him, Murdaugh has consistently denied his involvement in the murders. He maintained his innocence both during the investigation and on the witness stand.
Journal Entries and Legal Consequences
It was Murdaugh’s own lawyer, Jim Griffin, who recorded him reading entries from his journal during his double murder trial. These recordings were intended for an upcoming Fox Nation documentary on the case. However, prison officials discovered the violation after a warden reviewing phone calls heard Murdaugh’s voice on a call made using another inmate’s account.
As a result of these infractions, prison officials have warned Mr. Griffin that if he assists Murdaugh in violating the rules again, he may lose his ability to communicate with his client.
Looking Ahead
Despite his current legal troubles, Alex Murdaugh is expected to plead guilty on September 21 in federal court to charges of stealing millions of dollars from his clients, according to court records.
