Alex Murdaugh, Serving Two Life Sentences For Murder, Charged With Additional Tax Evasion

Convicted Murderer Alex Murdaugh Indicted on Tax Evasion Charges

Notorious convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh is back in the headlines again, this time for allegedly failing to report over $2.1 million in income earned through illegal activity in 2020 and 2021. This latest indictment for tax evasion is just one of 101 charges Murdaugh has faced, including fraud and money laundering.

Previous Charges

Murdaugh had already been indicted on tax evasion charges for actions that allegedly took place between 2011 and 2019. Part of these charges includes an alleged scheme to defraud his clients out of nearly $9 million and failing to pay over $600,000 in taxes to the state of South Carolina.

Murder Trial

The latest indictment comes just two months after Murdaugh was found guilty of killing his wife, Maggie, and youngest son, Paul. During the trial, Murdaugh spent nearly two days testifying in his own defense and admitted to lying about his whereabouts on the day of the murders. Prosecutors also presented cell phone evidence that placed Murdaugh at the scene of the crime.

Drug Addiction and Paranoia

Murdaugh has maintained his innocence, claiming that his alleged drug addiction made him “paranoid” and caused him to lie. He also testified that his son Paul was receiving threats over his involvement in a fatal 2019 boat crash that killed 19-year-old Mallory Beach.

Possible Consequences

If convicted of tax evasion, Murdaugh could face up to five years in prison and/or a fine of up to $10,000 plus attorneys fees. However, he is already serving two consecutive life sentences for the murders of his family members.
