Alex Murdaugh Trial: Housekeeper Says Disgraced Attorney Asked Her To Clean House After Wife, Son Were Murdered
A housekeeper who worked for disgraced former South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh’s family testified Friday at his trial that she was asked to clean the family home the morning after Murdaugh’s wife and son were murdered.
Blanca Turrubiate – Simmons, a housekeeper, said that she was called to clean the house the morning after the murders. reportedShe said that the house felt strange when she first entered it.
“It was just a weird feeling,” Turrubiate-Simpson testified, Buzzfeed News. “When I unlocked the front door to get in, it felt cold.”
Murdaugh is currently on trial for the alleged murder of Maggie Murdaugh and his youngest son, Paul.
Turrubiate – Simmons said that she noticed several strange things while moving through the house. She noted, for example, how the pots from her dinner the night before were placed away instead of being left there the next morning.
“It was kind of unusual,” She told jurors.
She also found Maggie’s pajamas laid out neatly on the floor of the doorway leading to the laundry room, something the housekeeper said wouldn’t normally happen.
“That was very unusual. She wouldn’t leave her clothes out like that. Not in the middle of the door like that,” Turrubiate-Simpson testified. “It just didn’t look right to me.”
It looked like someone had been showering in the home as there was a puddle, a towel, a pair khaki pants, and white T-shirt.
Turrubiate-Simpson also said that Maggie seemed reluctant to come to the family’s hunting lodge the day she was killed, as she preferred to stay at the family’s beach house. The housekeeper said Maggie had told him that Alex had asked his wife to go to the hunting lodge.
“She kind of sounded like she didn’t want to come home,” Turrubiate-Simpson testified.
The housekeeper also spoke about Alex Murdaugh’s attire changing on the day his wife and son were murdered. She said that he was wearing khaki pants with a seafoam polo shirt and khaki pants. This snap was taken by Paul Murdaugh earlier that day. Police interviewed Murdaugh after the murders wearing shorts and a clean white shirt. Turrubiate-Simpson stated that she washed one pair of khakis and never saw the polo or shoes Murdaugh wore.
Turrubiate–Simpson testified that Murdaugh tried to tell Turrubiate–Simpson that he was wearing something else on the day of the murders than the polo he remembered.
“It didn’t feel like he was inquiring,” Turrubiate-Simpson testified. “It felt more like he was trying to convince me of the shirt that he was wearing.”
Defense attorneys used the housekeeper’s testimony to claim the crime scene wasn’t properly protected.
