Alex Soros, the son of Democratic megadonor George Soros, disclosed further details about a meeting with Department of Government Efficiency leader Elon Musk that fell through after the 2024 election.
During an interview with New York Magazine’s Simon van Zuylen-Wood, Alex Soros reflected on Musk’s attempt to meet with him in November 2024. Despite the two men’s divergent political outlooks — Alex Soros backed former Vice President Kamala Harris, while Musk campaigned for President Donald Trump — the de facto DOGE head said he was curious to learn about the Soros heir’s views.
But Alex Soros told Zuylen-Wood that after a mutual acquaintance put the two men in touch, he never heard back from Musk. He suggested Musk never reached back out due to fear of “backlash from the MAGA crowd.”
“Alex tells me amusedly that after the election he drew the attention of Musk,” Zuylen-Wood wrote. Alex Soros told the writer: “He was responding to a lot of my tweets, liking them or stuff, and he [Musk] said, ‘I’d be curious to meet you and learn more about your goals.’”
“A mutual grantee tried to put them in touch,” Zuylen-Wood continued, adding that Alex Soros said, “We are both believers in civil liberties, or I guess we both used to believe in civil liberties; now, he’s [Musk] against them. He used to be a believer in climate change; now, he’s against it.”
“Alex says he never heard back [from Musk]: ‘Maybe it was the backlash from the MAGA crowd or, I don’t know, he got scared or he just wanted to troll me,’” Alex Soros said during the interview.
On Nov. 19, Musk said he would be “curious to meet” with Soros in response to an X post arguing that Trump’s reelection was “close” and did not represent “a powerful mandate.”
“I would be curious to meet and understand your goals better,” Musk wrote in a post to X.
“I often learn most from people whose views are different than my own. Open to meeting,” Alex Soros replied.
Alex Soros is heir to George Soros, a controversial left-wing billionaire who founded the Open Society Foundations, fostered close ties to Democratic administrations, targeted the Trump administration’s agenda, and has heavily funded progressive causes in the U.S. and abroad for decades.
In the months after suggesting he would meet with Alex Soros, Musk has railed against the Soros family, claiming they are tied to groups funding and organizing nationwide protests against DOGE. Those protests have targeted Republican lawmakers who support the bureaucracy-slashing initiative and have included vandalism of Tesla dealerships and products. Musk’s Tesla brand has taken a hit amid the backlash.

The FBI and Justice Department have characterized many of the violent acts against Tesla as “domestic terrorism” and opened investigations into the flood of incidents across the country.
Indivisible, a Democratic-aligned network with ties to Soros, has been organizing anti-Tesla campaigns, and led a nationwide protest against Musk and Trump on April 5, with over 900 rallies planned in the U.S.
