Nearly half of voters believe Biden will be replaced as nominee, according to a poll
Almost Half of Voters Believe President Joe Biden Could Be Replaced as Democratic Nominee, Poll Shows
According to a recent poll conducted by Monmouth University, nearly half of voters are of the opinion that President Joe Biden could potentially be replaced as the Democratic nominee. This comes at a time when concerns about Biden’s mental acuity are on the rise.
The poll, which took place between Feb. 8 and Feb. 12 and surveyed 822 registered voters, revealed that 48% of participants believed that Biden’s health concerns made it somewhat likely for him to be replaced as the Democratic nominee. On the other hand, 32% of voters thought that former President Donald Trump could face a similar outcome on the Republican ticket due to his legal battles.
Trump is currently facing four indictments and 91 felony charges, including allegations of inciting the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, mishandling classified documents, and being involved in business fraud.
Perceptions of Age and Mental Fitness Play a Role
Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute, suggests that perceptions of age may be influencing voters’ opinions. He points out that younger voters, who typically lean more Democratic, are showing little difference in candidate preference. This indicates that factors other than party affiliation are at play. Murray believes that Biden is viewed more negatively than Trump in terms of age.
Biden’s mental fitness has come under scrutiny recently due to his gaffes, such as confusing the president of Egypt with the president of Mexico during a press conference. Special counsel Robert Hur’s report, released last week, also highlighted Biden’s poor memory. These concerns, along with Biden’s age, are causing unease among voters as the election approaches.
Trump has also faced criticism regarding his mental stamina, as seen when he mistakenly referred to his Republican challenger Nikki Haley as Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) last month. However, the Monmouth poll indicates that 51% of voters have confidence in Trump’s mental fitness, compared to 32% who feel the same about Biden.
It is worth noting that this contrasts with polling data from 2020, which showed that 52% of voters had confidence in Biden’s mental stamina, while 45% felt the same about Trump.
Partisan Divide Persists
The poll also reveals a partisan divide when it comes to opinions on the candidates. 86% of Democrats believe that Trump is guilty of committing a crime related to the 2020 election, while 66% of Republicans think that Biden should be impeached. These numbers have remained relatively unchanged since a September report.
As the election draws near, it is clear that concerns about age and mental fitness are playing a significant role in shaping voter opinions. Both Biden and Trump face challenges in this regard, and it remains to be seen how these factors will impact the outcome of the election.

What does the gender divide among voters’ beliefs about President Biden’s likelihood of being replaced suggest about the influence of gender stereotypes and biases?
As people age, there is often a concern about their mental acuity and ability to carry out the demands of a high-pressure job like the presidency,” Murray explains. “This perception may be particularly strong for President Biden, who is the oldest president in US history.”
Murray also notes that the concerns about Biden’s mental fitness are not limited to Republican voters. He points out that 77% of independents and 37% of Democrats expressed some degree of concern about Biden’s ability to serve as president for the entirety of his term.
The poll also revealed a significant gender divide among respondents. 57% of male voters believed that Biden was at least somewhat likely to be replaced, while only 40% of female voters shared this belief. This finding suggests that gender stereotypes and biases may be influencing perception of Biden’s abilities.
It is important to note that concerns about a president’s health and ability to serve are not unprecedented. In the past, there have been instances where presidents have faced health issues, such as Franklin D. Roosevelt’s paralysis and Ronald Reagan’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease. However, these concerns do not always result in a replacement of the nominee.
While there is speculation about potential replacements for Biden, including Vice President Kamala Harris, it is ultimately up to the Democratic Party to make any such decisions. The president himself has expressed confidence in his ability to lead and dismisses claims about his mental fitness as baseless.
As the Biden administration continues to navigate the challenges of governing the country, it remains to be seen how these concerns about his mental fitness will play out. The results of the Monmouth University poll certainly indicate that a significant portion of voters have doubts about his ability to serve as the Democratic nominee, but only time will tell if these concerns translate into real action within the party.
The poll highlights the importance of transparency and open communication from political leaders, especially when it comes to their health and mental fitness. Addressing these concerns directly and proactively can help alleviate voter worries, build trust, and ensure that the focus remains on the pressing issues facing the nation.
Overall, the poll results underscore the significance of public perception and the impact it can have on the future of political leaders. The question of whether President Biden will be replaced as the Democratic nominee is likely to remain a topic of conversation and speculation throughout his term. However, ultimately, it is up to the American people and the Democratic Party to determine his political fate.
