Alphabet lays off hundreds from recruitment team worldwide.
Google Parent Alphabet Announces Layoffs in Global Recruiting Team
Google parent Alphabet is making changes to its global recruiting team as the tech giant adjusts its hiring strategy. The company announced on Wednesday that it will be letting go of a few hundred employees from the team.
However, this is not a widespread layoff, as Alphabet plans to retain a significant majority of the team to focus on hiring critical roles. The company is also committed to assisting the affected employees in finding new opportunities within the company or elsewhere.
Alphabet’s decision to downsize its recruiting team comes after other “Big Tech” companies, such as Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon, implemented aggressive layoffs earlier this year due to a weak economy.
Impact of Layoffs in the Tech Industry
Earlier this year, California-based Alphabet had already made significant job cuts, reducing its workforce by 6 percent, which amounted to approximately 12,000 jobs.
The tech industry as a whole has been affected by layoffs, with reports showing a significant rise in job cuts in the United States. In August, layoffs increased more than threefold compared to July and nearly fourfold compared to the previous year, according to a report by employment firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.
Economists had predicted a further increase in unemployment claims, reflecting the challenging economic conditions. However, the exact figures will be revealed in the upcoming weeks.
