AMC Theatres cancels film after pressure from trans group.
AMC Theatres Cancels Film Showcasing Voices of Young People Who Have De-Transitioned
AMC Theatres has made the controversial decision to cancel the release of a film that gives a platform to young individuals who have de-transitioned after undergoing hormone therapy and surgeries to affirm their gender identity. The film, titled “No Way Back: The Reality of Gender-Affirming Care,” was scheduled to premiere on June 21 in theaters nationwide. The cancellation comes after pressure from a transgender group called the Queer Trans Project, which has not even seen the full film.
The distributor of the film, Deplorable Films, expressed their disappointment in AMC’s decision, stating that the Queer Trans Project’s claim of detransitioning being equivalent to conversion therapy is a weak attempt to conflate the two. They also suggested that the group may be influenced by those who profit from the surgical and pharmaceutical industries.
Deplorable Films emphasized that those opposing the film have not even seen it, and their actions to silence it are extreme. The film features medical professionals and five young people who have de-transitioned, sharing their experiences.
Voices of De-Transitioners
One of the individuals featured in the film, Abel, spoke out about his transition to female as a teenager and subsequent de-transition. He warned others, especially young boys seeking an easier life as a masculine male, that transitioning will not save them and can actually destroy their lives.
Laura, another person in the film, shared her story of taking high doses of testosterone and undergoing a double mastectomy before de-transitioning at the age of 22. She advocates for complete bans on transition procedures for minors, arguing that children are not capable of making long-term decisions about their reproductive and sexual health.
Controversy and Celebration
The Queer Trans Project labeled the film as “anti-trans” and accused it of perpetuating harmful misinformation. They launched a campaign urging allies to send letters to AMC, resulting in the film’s cancellation. The group celebrated their success in de-platforming the film, claiming it as a victory for their community.
Even Democratic state Senator Scott Wiener of California criticized AMC for initially supporting the film, accusing it of promoting anti-trans propaganda. However, the film’s website states that it is still available for streaming and on DVD despite the cancellation at AMC Theatres.
