The Shifting Landscape of Elite Universities
The ground is rapidly shifting beneath elite universities, with once-generous donors retracting almost a billion dollars in donations. This may only be the beginning, following the disastrous performance of several Ivy League presidents in a recent congressional hearing. The fallout has already led to the forced resignation of the University of Pennsylvania’s president, Liz Magill, and Harvard’s Claudine Gay, who is facing charges of plagiarism, is likely to be next. The House Committee on Education and the Workforce has announced a full investigation of Harvard, MIT, and UPenn, with the potential to expand to other schools. The discontent with elite universities seems to be widespread, with billionaire hedge-funders like Bill Ackman, grandstanding politicians, and even Elon Musk piling on.
The Deep-Rooted Problems in Academia
However, it is crucial to recognize that the significant issues with academia have existed for decades and extend to nearly all universities in the U.S., regardless of their elite status.
The recent extreme political zealotry observed on Ivy League campuses should come as no surprise to anyone who has spent even a short amount of time at these institutions. The only surprising aspect is that it has taken so long for donors to notice the alarming issues present in modern American universities.
Academia has undergone a profound transformation over the past few decades, shifting from a classical institution of learning to a laboratory for various “woke” political activism and extremism. Many professors and college administrators now see themselves as progressive frontline fighters in an ideological war, indoctrinating the young with radical notions of Critical Race Theory, “DEI,” and other fringe issues. These topics are often treated as non-negotiable orthodoxies, leaving no room for genuine debate.
It is high time for the benefactors of the ivory tower to awaken to the reality of what the modern university has become. The experimental and faddish cultural theories taught in classrooms and implemented through campus-wide policies have far-reaching effects on society. As students graduate and carry these theories into the real world, they make unreasonable and counterproductive demands on major societal institutions, resembling a woke “Children of the Corn” dynamic.
Unveiling Illegal Hiring Practices
Another issue that is now being exposed is the illegal hiring practices within academia. Most college departments discriminate against whites, men, and heterosexuals in favor of individuals from “marginalized” groups. The selection process for faculty and staff positions systematically screens out white male candidates. While some straight white men are hired, it often occurs when they are significantly more qualified than other candidates. Even in these cases, the lesser-qualified candidate is sometimes chosen, as seen with Harvard’s president.
Furthermore, dissertation preferences play a significant role in faculty hiring decisions, particularly in the liberal arts. Hiring committees tend to favor candidates whose subjects of study align with fashionable and politically correct ideologies, dismissing topics that are deemed politically incorrect. Politics undeniably influences hiring choices.
Academia’s Wider Issues
The problems with academia extend beyond the campus climate and hiring practices. For instance, at most universities, a significant portion of courses are taught by underpaid adjunct instructors or grad students who earn less than restaurant waiters. Even Ivy League schools like Harvard have an unacceptable percentage of courses taught by part-time professors.
Administrative bloat is another concern plaguing universities. Over the past two decades, the number of administrative positions has skyrocketed, including thousands of new DEI positions with six-figure salaries. Most of the funds allocated for tuition, student loans, and donations go towards administrators and buildings, many of which are unnecessary and counterproductive to real education.
Surprisingly, the deterioration and ideological zealotry of academia did not hinder its fundraising efforts until now. Money continued to pour in, often from individuals who should have been more skeptical of an institution that increasingly distanced itself from their values.
It is astonishing how uninformed and uninterested most donors are about the decline of academia and the pervasive influence of extreme orthodoxies throughout universities. While there is still legitimate learning taking place, it is overshadowed by an ideological agenda that is often palpable, even if not subtle.
If this recent controversy serves as an ideological wake-up call to the ivory tower and those who fund it, it could be a positive development.

Professors and students who deviate from the prevailing orthodoxy face censorship, character assassination, and even threats to their careers. This climate of fear and intolerance undermines the very foundation of higher education and impedes the pursuit of knowledge.
Universities, particularly those at the pinnacle of academic prestige, should be bastions of open-mindedness and free discourse. They should foster an environment where ideas are examined critically, debated, and subjected to rigorous scrutiny. Unfortunately, the current state of affairs in elite universities leaves little room for intellectual diversity and genuine academic inquiry.
A Call for Change
In order to reclaim the integrity and purpose of higher education, a comprehensive reform is necessary. Elite universities need to recommit themselves to the pursuit of knowledge, intellectual diversity, and academic freedom. Campus policies and hiring practices should be based on principles of meritocracy, rather than ideological agendas. Students should be exposed to a broad range of viewpoints, allowing them to develop critical thinking skills and form their own opinions.
Donors, too, have an important role to play in influencing the direction of academia. By directing their funding towards institutions that prioritize intellectual rigor and free inquiry, they can incentivize a shift in the educational landscape. Additionally, alumni and stakeholders should hold universities accountable and demand transparency in how their donations are being used to ensure that they align with the core values of education and intellectual exploration.
The shifting landscape of elite universities presents both challenges and opportunities. It is a critical moment for these institutions to reflect on their purpose and restore their focus on the pursuit of knowledge and academic excellence. By addressing the deep-rooted problems in academia and embracing change, elite universities can regain the trust and support of their donors, stakeholders, and society at large.
