‘America’s worst mayor’ loses reelection primary in landslide

Dolton, Illinois, Mayor Tiffany Henyard lost the Democratic primary for reelection in a landslide after a turbulent term in which she was embroiled in various scandals.

Since taking office in 2021 in the village outside Chicago, Henyard’s rocky tenure has led to her being dubbed “America’s worst mayor” by critics, while she has proclaimed herself “super mayor.” She lost in the Democratic primary for mayor to Dolton Trustee Jason House on Tuesday by a roughly 87.9%-12.1% result, according to the Cook County Clerk’s Office.

Henyard did not speak at her election watch party Tuesday evening, according to NBC Chicago, but House took a victory lap at his election night event.

“We faced four years of intimidation, four years of failure, and tonight is a new day for the city of Dolton,” House said Tuesday. “The community spoke loud and clear tonight.”

House will now face Casundra Hopson, an independent, in the April 1 general election.

Henyard will not be on the ballot for reelection for either of her current positions on April 1 following her loss in the mayoral primary. Last year, she lost her bid to be the Democratic nominee for Thornton Township supervisor, a position she currently holds.

ILLINOIS TOWN MEETING ENDS IN BRAWL AS ‘WORST MAYOR IN AMERICA’ MAKES AN APPEARANCE

The Dolton mayor’s tenure was plagued by accusations of improper use of taxpayer funds. An audit conducted by Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot found Henyard’s lavish spending and first-class tickets on travel sunk the town’s general fund into $3.65 million in debt. Henyard has resisted calls to resign, while a 2022 effort to recall her was invalidated by a court.

The latest incident involving Henyard was when she got involved in a brawl at a town meeting after a resident called her a “b****” during the public comment portion of the gathering.
