Ana de Armas Transforms Into Marilyn Monroe In Netflix’s First Trailer For “Blonde”
Marilyn, is that you?
Ana de Armas disappears into the role of Marilyn Monroe in Netflix’s first trailer for “Blonde,” which dropped Thursday.
Based on the bestselling novel by Joyce Carol Oates, the NC-17 biopic is set to premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival and starts streaming September 28.
Over the course of the approximately two-minute-long clip, de Armas channels the iconic Hollywood bombshell in some of her most iconic fashion looks, from her pink “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” gown to her windblown white halter dress from “The Seven Year Itch.”
Costume designer Jennifer Johnson (who previously worked on “I, Tonya” and “Beginners”) also perfectly recreated Monroe’s tie-front “Niagara” frock and her sheer, sequined “Some Like It Hot” gown, among other unforgettable outfits.
“Marilyn doesn’t exist. When I come out of my dressing room, I’m Norma Jeane,” de Armas says in the trailer. “I’m still her when the camera’s rolling. Marilyn Monroe only exists on the screen.”
While the 34-year-old “Knives Out” breakout star didn’t have to actually go blond for “Blonde,” the role did require a bald cap.
“I had to go bald every day, because with the blonde wigs … [Monroe] went through different shades of blond from golden to really platinum, so for these wigs that are beautifully made, you can’t have anything dark underneath,” the brunette beauty told Byrdie in 2021.
“It was like, three and a half hours every day of makeup. I think I actually cried the first time I saw [the wigs] on. Probably because I was terrified.”
