Andy Harris: Al Green broke ‘all decorum’ with congressional outbursts

In ‍recent developments, Representative Andy Harris ⁣(R-MD) has called for his⁤ colleague Al Green (D-TX) to be ⁤stripped of his committee assignments due to disruptive behavior during congressional proceedings. Harris ‍claims that green’s outbursts, particularly during ‌President Donald Trump’s address to Congress, violated the decorum of the House. Green was⁢ recently censured by the House, with support from all Republicans and ten ⁤Democrats, after he protested during the president’s⁣ speech and sang “We‍ Shall Overcome” while facing his censure.

Harris highlighted that Green’s ⁣actions disrupted House proceedings both during the president’s ‌address and when⁣ he was supposed ‍to read the censure articles. He expressed frustration that Green did not accept the punishment and suggested that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA)⁣ should bring further resolutions regarding green’s conduct to ‍the floor. Additionally, Representative Andy Ogles (R-TN) has supported similar actions against other Democrats who ⁢shouted during the⁤ censure discussions.

Amidst this, some ‌Democrats are expressing the need for “radical civility” and acknowledging that Green’s behavior detracted from their message. Former President⁤ Trump also criticized⁣ Green, labeling him as a “low IQ” individual⁢ and an embarrassment to Congress.

Andy Harris contends Al Green broke ‘all decorum’ with congressional outbursts

Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD) urged House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) to strip Rep. Al Green (D-TX) of his committee assignments, arguing that the Democratic lawmaker was disruptive twice over the last week.

Green was censured in the House of Representatives by all Republicans and 10 Democrats after he verbally protested during President Donald Trump’s address to Congress last week, and Green and other Democrats sang “We Shall Overcome” during the reading of his censure resolution. Harris has suggested Johnson will bring the resolution to the floor this week, claiming that Green did not “accept his punishment.”

“As a matter of fact, he disturbed the decorum in the House twice last week: once during the president’s speech and the second time when he was supposed to stand in the well of the House and just read the articles of censure against him,” Harris argued on Fox Business’s Mornings with Maria Bartiromo. “No, they started singing in the well of the House. This breaks all decorum, he should have his committee assignments removed, just like the Democrats did to a couple of Republicans of the last Congress.”

Harris also suggested that Democrats have no “clear message” to voters, which he said runs counter to how Trump is speaking to the United States. He added that the president is “clearly” winning the messaging battle against the Democrats.

Beyond censuring Green, Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) is also seeking to strip committee assignments from Democrats who shouted at Republican lawmakers during the censure arguments, warning that those who “act like a child in the Halls of Congress” will be treated as such.

One of the 10 Democrats who voted to censure Green was Rep. Ami Bera (D-CA), who defended his vote on Sunday by arguing that Democrats need “radical civility.” He also suggested that Green’s outburst “became a distraction.”

Trump has also rebuked Green for interrupting his speech, calling the Texas Democrat a “low IQ” person who is “an embarrassment to Congress.”
