Andy Kim leads opponent in New Jersey Senate race to unseat Menendez: Poll
Rep. Andy Kim Surpasses Tammy Murphy in Favorability Rating for New Jersey Senate Race
Despite being less well-known than the state’s first lady, Rep. Andy Kim (D-NJ) has garnered a significantly higher favorability rating in the New Jersey Senate race. According to a recent Monmouth University poll, Kim boasts a 48% favorable rating and a mere 2% unfavorable rating. While 24% of respondents expressed no opinion, 26% admitted to being unfamiliar with him. In contrast, Tammy Murphy, wife of Gov. Phil Murphy (D-NJ), received a 24% favorable rating, a 13% unfavorable rating, and a staggering 50% of respondents had no opinion of her, with only 13% claiming to have never heard of her.
Insider’s Game
Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute, emphasized that Kim’s higher favorability rating can be attributed to his more extensive public record compared to Murphy. However, he also noted that the current state of the senate race indicates it is still an “insider’s game,” with candidates primarily focusing on appealing to party leaders and committee members to secure county lines. Murray added that it is not surprising that most voters are uninformed about the candidates at this stage.
Multiple Contenders and Menendez’s Troubles
The New Jersey Senate seat, currently held by Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), has attracted multiple candidates. Menendez himself is facing federal corruption charges, with new charges of extortion and obstruction of justice recently added. Despite pressure from fellow party members to resign, Menendez has not yet announced whether he will run for reelection.
Kim, who made history as the first Asian American elected to federal office in 2018, launched his campaign to unseat the incumbent in November. Shortly after, Murphy entered the race, further expanding the field of Democratic contenders.
