Andy Kim will support government shutdown to ‘hold’ GOP ‘accountable’ – Washington Examiner

Senator Andy Kim (D-NJ) has expressed his willingness to support ⁢a⁢ goverment shutdown if it means holding the Republican ‍party‌ accountable for their actions under President donald Trump’s administration. In⁢ an interview with NBC News, Kim criticized⁤ Republican lawmakers ‍for facilitating what he describes as a dismantling of the federal government ‍and stated that Democrats should not be relied upon for votes on ‌continuing ⁣resolutions moving forward. He emphasized the ⁤importance⁢ of accountability ‌and ⁢stated that any attempts to support‌ government funding that allow for ⁤continued “lawlessness” by the Trump administration would not ⁤be acceptable. Kim’s comments come amidst heightened tensions over budget negotiations and‌ funding cuts enacted by the White House, reflecting broader dissatisfaction among Democrats regarding the current administration’s approach to ‌federal governance.

Sen. Andy Kim (D-NJ) said he is open to working with Democrats to deny Republicans the votes needed to keep the government funded as a response to President Donald Trump’s overhaul of the federal government.

“In a few weeks, the Republicans are going to try to figure out how they move forward, and they have, for the last two years, needed Democratic votes for every single continuing resolution, and they should not count on that this time,” Kim said in an interview on NBC News’s Meet the Press.

Kim, a first-term senator, chastised Republican lawmakers for allowing the Trump administration to “dismantle the government.”

“So yes, look, if we have to take steps to be able to hold them accountable, use the leverage that we have to force it, I cannot support efforts that will continue this lawlessness that we’re seeing when it comes to this administration’s actions, and for us to be able to support government funding in that way only for them to turn it around, to dismantle the government … That is not something that should be allowed,” the New Jersey senator said.

Last month, the Trump administration sent letters to nearly all 2.3 million federal employees offering to pay them full benefits through September if they resign from their positions. The initiative was part of Trump’s efforts to slash government spending through the oversight of the Department of Government Efficiency. However, a judge temporarily blocked the deferred resignation offer, pending a Monday court hearing.

Kim is not alone in his frustration with the Trump administration. Last week, Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) said budget negotiations with Republicans were difficult with the White House cutting funding for federal agencies.

Democrats and Republicans alike must be able to trust that when a deal gets signed into law, it will be followed,” she said.

Kim argued that if Congress is unable to vote on a budget, then the fault will fall on Republicans, who are in the majority.

“This is about whether or not they can get the votes,” Kim said. “They are the majority, and if they cannot govern that, then you know that’s for the American people to see.”
