Anheuser-Busch reacts to Dylan Mulvaney’s criticism of Bud Light.
Anheuser-Busch Responds to Controversial Transgender Influencer’s Claims
Anheuser-Busch, the parent company of Bud Light, has addressed the recent controversy surrounding transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. Mulvaney claimed that the brewer abandoned him after their marketing deal turned into a fiasco, resulting in a significant loss of market value for the company.
“As we’ve said, we remain committed to the programs and partnerships we have forged over decades with organizations across a number of communities, including those in the LGBTQ+ community,” stated an Anheuser-Busch spokesperson. “The privacy and safety of our employees and our partners is always our top priority. As we move forward, we will focus on what we do best — brewing great beer for everyone and earning our place in moments that matter to our consumers.”
Mulvaney, who identifies as a transgender woman, expressed his frustration towards the company in a video posted on social media. He wanted to address the issue and share his feelings, which had been weighing on him.
“I took a brand deal with a company that I loved. And I posted a sponsored video to my page,” Mulvaney explained. “And it must have been a slow news week, because the way that this ad got blown up, you would have thought I was like, on a billboard, or on a TV commercial or something major — but no, it was just an Instagram video.”
The ad featured Mulvaney promoting a special can with his face on it, which unfortunately led to an overwhelming amount of bullying and transphobia directed towards him.
“I should have made this video months ago, but I didn’t. And I was scared,” Mulvaney admitted. “I was scared of more backlash. And I felt personally guilty for what transpired. So I patiently waited for things to get better. But surprise, they haven’t really. And I was waiting for the brand to reach out to me, but they never did. For months now, I’ve been scared to leave my house, I have been ridiculed in public, I’ve been followed.”
According to Mulvaney, the failure of a company to publicly support a trans employee is even worse than not hiring one at all. It gives customers permission to express transphobia and hate freely, which has severe consequences for the entire LGBTQ+ community.
Despite the challenges faced, Mulvaney emphasized that trans and queer individuals are also customers who enjoy beer. He even mentioned his lesbian friends who could outdrink the haters. However, turning a blind eye and pretending everything is okay is not an option at this time.
