College students who oppose Israel refer to themselves as “militants” and advocate for armed struggle as the means to “liberate Palestine
Mount Holyoke College’s Anti-Israel Student Group Advocates for Violence
A student group at Mount Holyoke College has sparked controversy by posting pro-violence graphics on social media. The group, known as 1837SJP, refers to themselves as militants and boldly declares that “armed struggle” is the only way to “liberate Palestine.”
Last week, the 1837SJP club at the Massachusetts college shared a graphic on Instagram, advocating for the destruction of Israel and stating that “armed struggle is the only way to liberate Palestine.”
Identifying themselves as the official Students for Justice in Palestine chapter at Mount Holyoke, the group is not a registered student organization, according to the student paper.
In recent months, universities across the country have faced controversy surrounding anti-Israel demonstrations and incidents of anti-Semitism. The students at Mount Holyoke, like other radical student groups, seem to be embracing terrorism against Jews.
In a January post, the Mount Holyoke group referred to themselves as a “militant community 4 good” and encouraged students to resist arrest and not support the police. They have also referred to the U.S.-designated terror group Hamas as “Palestinian resistance brigades.”
On Christmas, the group shared a graphic with the text “May Israel fall Inshallah.”
The club has also demanded the college to sever ties with certain companies and provide specific support services for Palestinian and Arab students, as stated in a November letter.
Since the brutal attack by Hamas, Mount Holyoke College has experienced incidents of anti-Semitism and anti-Israel activism. These include finding a poster of a Star of David being thrown in the trash and a chalkboard with offensive messages.

The college president, Danielle R. Holley, responded to these incidents, stating that the college took immediate action to address the violations of college policy. Investigations are ongoing.
In November, the group staged a sit-in at a building with the college president’s office, resulting in disciplinary meetings for two members who scaled scaffolding to bring food to protestors.

Shortly after, the group announced that some of their demands were met by the college, including the establishment of support services and a College-organized “vigil for the martyrs.”
Recently, the group hosted University of Michigan assistant professor Umayyah Cable, who referred to Hamas’s attack on Israel as “Palestinian’s liberation.”
On October 13, Cable criticized her colleagues for not signing an open-letter accusing Israel of genocide.

In November, over 78 Mount Holyoke faculty members signed a letter accusing Israel of genocide and calling for divestment from companies supporting the Israeli military.
Mount Holyoke College and the student leaders of the SJP group have not responded to requests for comment.
Did the 1837SJP group at Mount Holyoke College advocate for violence and terrorism in their demands?
Ith the demand that the college sever ties with certain companies, including those that support the Israeli military. They also called for the college to provide support services specifically for Palestinian and Arab students. These demands were outlined in a letter posted on their Instagram account.
The actions and statements made by the 1837SJP group at Mount Holyoke College are deeply concerning. By advocating for violence and terrorism, they are promoting a dangerous and harmful ideology. The use of armed struggle and the destruction of Israel as a means to achieve their goals is not only morally wrong, but it also goes against the principles of peace and justice that they claim to support.
It is important to recognize that criticizing Israeli policies and advocating for Palestinian rights can be done in a peaceful and constructive manner. There are many student groups and organizations that engage in meaningful dialogue, education, and activism around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict without resorting to violence or hate speech.
Mount Holyoke College and other educational institutions have a responsibility to address incidents of anti-Semitism, hate speech, and advocacy for violence on their campuses. These incidents not only create a hostile environment for Jewish students and faculty, but they also undermine the values of inclusivity and respect that should be upheld in academic settings.
It is crucial for universities to have clear policies in place that condemn hate speech, discrimination, and violence. These policies should be enforced consistently and thoroughly, and any individuals or groups that violate these policies should be held accountable for their actions. In addition, universities should provide support and resources to Jewish students who may experience harassment or feel unsafe due to anti-Israel sentiment.
Dialogue and education are essential for promoting understanding and finding peaceful resolutions to conflicts. Universities have a unique role in fostering intellectual debate and creating spaces for diverse perspectives to be heard. However, this should not come at the expense of promoting violence or endorsing hate speech.
It is my hope that Mount Holyoke College and other institutions will take a strong stance against violence and hate speech, and actively work towards creating an inclusive and respectful environment for all students. By promoting dialogue, understanding, and peaceful activism, we can contribute to a more just and equitable world.
