Dozens Arrested in England’s Anti-Monarchy Protests.
Dozens Arrested During King Charles III’s Coronation Celebrations in London
Amid the coronation celebrations of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, dozens of people were arrested in London on Saturday. The police had warned of a low tolerance for disrupters and dealt “robustly” with them. Some of the arrests were for disrupting public order and conspiracy to cause a public nuisance, while some anti-monarchy protesters with the group Republic were also arrested following a demonstration at Trafalgar Square. Republic’s head Graham Smith was among those arrested. The arrests of peaceful protesters caused alarm among human rights groups, with Human Rights Watch UK director Yasmine Ahmed stating that it was something one would expect to see in Moscow, not London.
Protests During the Coronation
Protesters with the group Republic held up signs in Trafalgar Square that said “Not my king.” The police defended the arrests, stating that while protest is lawful and can be disruptive, they have a duty to intervene when protest becomes criminal and may cause serious disruption. The coronation is a once in a generation event, and that is a key consideration in their assessment. In total, 52 people were arrested, and all remain in custody, police said.
The Coronation Ceremony
King Charles III and Queen Camilla were officially crowned in a ceremony at London’s Westminster Abbey on Saturday morning, drawing thousands to the area to see the king and queen riding to and from Buckingham Palace. Piers Morgan commented on the coronation, calling it the “birth of a new stage” of the monarchy and expressing how excited the British people are.
