Anti-Semitism, Wokeness, and the Vitality of a Strong America for Israel’s Survival, Part 1: A Mighty Tale from a Tiny Nation
My Complex Relationship with Israel
Being Jewish and born in Soviet Russia, my connection to Israel has always been intricate. However, having lived in America for the majority of my life, my ties to Israel have become more academic than personal. Yet, something changed within me after the events of October 7. The massacre in Israel, reminiscent of the cruelty of the Nazis, coupled with the global condemnation of Israel before it could defend itself against Hamas, brought anti-Semitism back into my consciousness.
The survival of Israel has never been directly linked to the well-being of my descendants. However, the recent events have made it clear to me that if this beacon of democracy in a desert of darkness is extinguished, it will not only mean the end for Jews in Israel but also for Jews worldwide. The historical homeland of my ancestors has transformed into a real and vital refuge for the Jewish people.
A United Israel
What amazed me was how Israel, a country deeply divided before October 7, came together in the face of adversity. Tech companies that had previously opposed the government now offered their assistance. The Israeli government swiftly implemented AI software to identify Hamas terrorists, and individuals opened their homes to displaced families. The Museum of Tolerance Jerusalem became a hub for aid, as support poured in from all corners of the globe.
The population of Israel even grew by 3% during this time, as reservists returned home and volunteers like my friends traveled to Israel to help their historical homeland. They made sandwiches for soldiers, cleaned houses for refugees, and worked in the fields to salvage rotting potatoes. The unity and determination of the Israeli people were palpable.
Israel’s Purpose in War
Israel’s resolve in the face of war stems from a deep sense of purpose. Israelis wake up every morning knowing they can make a difference for their country. They understand that this war is not merely retaliation but the elimination of a terrorist regime that seeks to spread its cruelty beyond Israel’s borders. The stakes are high, and Israel fights not only for its own survival but also for the protection of the non-Islamic world.
While the civilian casualties in Gaza are heartbreaking, Israel is left with no choice. Hamas continues to launch rockets into Israel daily, and the group’s leaders have made it clear that their actions on October 7 were just the beginning. Israel is judged by a different standard than any other country, facing condemnation even as it strives to minimize civilian harm.
The Humanity of Israel
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are liberating Gazans from Hamas, but the densely populated area makes it incredibly challenging to spare civilian lives. Hamas fighters do not wear uniforms, making it difficult to distinguish between combatants and innocent civilians. The IDF soldiers, many of whom have families of their own, strive to maintain their humanity amidst the chaos of war.
A Global Battle
This war against Hamas is not just Israel’s fight; it is a battle between good and evil. Islamic extremists seek to establish an Islamic caliphate worldwide, targeting the Middle East, Europe, and the United States. We, the infidels, are their enemies, and they will stop at nothing to impose their beliefs. Israel’s victory in this war is crucial, but for my historical homeland to survive, the United States, my home for over three decades, must also thrive.

How does the portrayal of Israel in the media differ from the personal experiences of the author?
Style=”font-weight: 400″>Contrary to the portrayals of Israel in the media, I have personally witnessed the humanity of Israeli society. During my visits to Israel, I have seen people of different backgrounds, religions, and nationalities coexisting peacefully. Israeli hospitals provide free medical treatment to thousands of Palestinians every year, regardless of their affiliation. Israeli society is a mosaic of diversity, embracing various cultures and ideologies.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) also prioritize the lives of civilians. They utilize advanced technology and tactics to minimize casualties, even warning residents of impending airstrikes through targeted phone calls and leaflet drops. Israel has invested heavily in developing systems to protect its citizens, such as the Iron Dome missile defense system, which intercepts rockets targeting populated areas.
Many Israelis, like my own family, grapple with ethical questions amidst the conflict. We question the morality of war while acknowledging that Israel faces an existential threat. It is a complex and nuanced situation that often gets oversimplified and distorted in global discourse.
Navigating My Complex Relationship
As I reflect on my complex relationship with Israel, I am reminded of the resilience and determination displayed by its people. I am reminded of the importance of supporting this historical homeland that provides a safe haven for Jewish people around the world. While critical of certain policies, I recognize that the survival and flourishing of Israel is crucial for the Jewish community and humanity as a whole.
My connection to Israel goes beyond politics and theories. It represents a deep-rooted part of my identity and history. It represents the struggle, resilience, and triumph of a nation facing countless challenges. My complex relationship with Israel is a reflection of the complexities of the region, but above all, it is a reminder of the enduring bond that ties Jewish people together.
