Any Steve Bannon cellmate would suffer ‘cruel and unusual punishment’: James Carville – Washington Examiner
Democratic strategist James Carville made disparaging remarks about Steve Bannon, who is set to begin a prison sentence next week on two contempt charges. Carville’s comments were made during an appearance on Ari Melber’s MSNBC show “The Beat,” where he discussed the upcoming 2024 election and Bannon’s impending incarceration. Carville joked about the discomfort Bannon’s cellmate might experience, suggesting the cellmate could have grounds for an Eighth Amendment case, which involves the protection against cruel and unusual punishment. This was in line with Carville’s view that Bannon’s presence would significantly worsen the jail environment.
James Carville, a Democratic strategist, threw shade at Steve Bannon, who is set to report to prison next week on two contempt charges.
Carville appeared on Ari Melber’s The Beat on MSNBC to discuss the 2024 election and Bannon’s prison time. The Democratic strategist had some choice words about the experience of anyone who would be incarcerated with the former Trump adviser.
“He will be incarcerated under this federal calendar on Election Day,” Melber said.
“Well, he’s going to have four months to contemplate everything,” Carville said. “But I think whoever his cellmate is can make a good Eighth Amendment case, if you remember that from law school. That’s cruel and unusual punishment.”
Bannon was sentenced to four months in prison earlier this year. Bannon faced criminal charges just before President Donald Trump left office regarding funding the border wall but was pardoned by Trump one day before President Joe Biden’s inauguration. Bannon was later charged with contempt stemming from an order to testify to the Jan. 6 committee.
The Eighth Amendment protects against excessive bail, excessive fines, and “cruel and unusual punishments,” though the Constitution and the Founding Fathers have not defined what “cruel and unusual punishments” comprise. They are commonly accepted and generally decided by the Supreme Court as constituting torture or excessive sentencing.
“You have to be in the cell and smell this guy,” Carville said. “I think that’s something out of some North Korean torture chamber.”
Carville went on to discuss what Bannon would be doing for his four-month sentence.
“Boy’s going to have a lot of time to think about 2020 and his past life and whatever the future holds because he’s going to the penitentiary, probably for longer than four months,” he said.

Carville also said a prayer for Bannon’s potential cellmate.
“But please, Lord, he needs a cell by himself because he’s going to stink that jail up something fierce,” Carville said.
