AOC says McCarthy lacks votes for debt limit deal post House bill passage.
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez Calls Out Lack of Support for McCarthy’s Debt Limit Plan
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) isn’t buying House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s claims that he has the support to advance his debt limit plan. In fact, she’s flipping the script and claiming that he’s the one lacking support.
Despite the Limit, Save, Grow Act passing in a 217-215 vote last month, Ocasio-Cortez argues that the Republican party lacks the necessary support to pass a bill in the Senate. She boldly stated that McCarthy “doesn’t have the votes in the House” and “doesn’t even have the votes in *his own party.*”

Ocasio-Cortez took to Twitter to call out McCarthy, saying “Why would anyone act like Kevin McCarthy has votes right now? He hasn’t done the work.” She also pointed out that he doesn’t have the votes for his current proposal in the Senate.
McCarthy Fires Back
Since passing the Limit, Save, Grow Act, McCarthy has been needling Democrats over their inability to secure passage of a stand-alone debt limit hike in the Senate. He tweeted on Tuesday, “A simple way for the Democrats to avoid default is to pass the Limit, Save, Grow Act in the Senate. With just 9 days left to go, Republicans remain the only ones in Washington who have actually done anything to lift the debt limit and avoid default.”
For weeks, many analysts speculated that McCarthy couldn’t get his caucus to coalesce around a debt ceiling bill. However, he managed to achieve a breakthrough in late April. The bill would increase the debt ceiling by $1.5 trillion or until March 24, 2024, whichever comes first, in exchange for spending cuts. Democrats have criticized the bill as a non-starter.
Ocasio-Cortez Urges Biden to Consider Invoking 14th Amendment
Ocasio-Cortez has joined many progressives in urging the Biden administration to consider invoking the 14th Amendment, which some legal analysts argue could be used to scrap the debt ceiling. She has also warned that if the White House caves to GOP spending demands, there will be backlash. “It’s going to be a problem,” she told reporters. “We do not legislate through the debt ceiling for this very reason.”
Treasury Secretary Yellen Projects Cash Shortage by June 1
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has projected that the government has until June 1 before it will run out of the cash needed to meet all its obligations, amplifying concerns about a default. Debt limit negotiators met on Tuesday, but a breakthrough agreement doesn’t appear to be close. They are expected to continue negotiating throughout the week.
