AOC faced hecklers at NYC town hall on immigration and debt ceiling.
Protesters Interrupt Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Town Hall
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) faced protesters during a town hall she held in Queens, New York, on Friday.
During the event, a man carrying American flags shouted, “American citizens before migrants,” and was eventually escorted out while being booed by others in the audience. The incident was captured on video and posted to social media by Freedom News TV.
Where Do You Stand on the Migrant Issue?
The man also asked Ocasio-Cortez, “Where are you on the migrant issue? You’re absent. You’re a piece of s***.”
Other protesters also interrupted the congresswoman’s town hall, with one shouting, “$100 billion for Ukraine that you voted for.” Some held signs reading “Stop funding Ukraine,” “America First. Vetted legal migrants only,” and “AOC STOP LYING.”
The town hall comes amid the impending debt ceiling limit deadline set for June 5 and two weeks after the Southern border policy Title 42 ended. New York has been dealing with immigrants sent from Texas for several months now.
New York City Mayor Calls for Migrants to be Sent to Every City
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has called for migrants to be sent to every city in the country to alleviate the burden on one city. The city has received over 70,000 migrant asylum-seekers, with 42,000 still in its care.
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen shifted the debt ceiling deadline from June 1 to June 5, giving House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and the White House a few extra days to deal with the situation. Talks are ongoing but delicate, according to Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC), one of McCarthy’s deputies.
