AOC says Clarence Thomas’s statement on lavish trips ‘raises more serious questions’

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) believes Justice Clarence Thomas‘s statement, where he defended himself against allegations of corruption from undisclosed gifts, only “raises more serious questions.”

When speaking on CNN’s’s State of the Union on Sunday, Ocasio-Cortez, who has been outspoken in calling for action against Thomas and has even suggested that he be impeached for the unknown gifts, backed up her accusations of Thomas.

” I believe that his own proclamation raises, in some way, even more serious problems and contradicts many of the details on the ground.” Later in his proclamation, he claimed that the individual hospitality of an old friend was the cause and the justification for this exemption. And in his speech, he identified himself as a 25-year mate. In an effort to defend himself, Justice Thomas admits in his speech that he started this relationship with a businessman and started receiving these kinds of presents after being appointed to the Supreme Court of the United States. Justice Tom has served on the prosecutor for 30 years. Ocasio – Cortez said,” I think that in and of itself indicates a very, very serious issue.

The New York congresswoman added that because he cited other people’s’s opinions as justification for keeping the gifts a secret, the statement implicates other justices.

Additionally, he is just blaming his colleagues, and I think Chief Justice John Roberts had just come forward and admit that this court is allowing this kind of extremely serious problem to occur. When Justice Thomas speaks about his coworkers and when he discusses who gave him the advice to break the law, I believe you are aware of this. Ocasio-Cortez continued,” I think we need to find out who those individuals are.

She added that Thomas should be the subject of an investigation, but that the high court lacks the” validity” to do so on its own, citing the fruitless investigation of the Supreme Court hole in 2022.

Thomas admitted in a statement on Friday that he did go on vacations with his friend Harlan Crow— a Dallas-based real estate developer and Republican donor— but added that at the time, it was against the rules to disclose gifts.

” Harlan and Kathy Crow are among our closest friends, and we have known each other for more than 25 year.” We have accompanied them on a number of family outings over the more than 25 years we have known them, as acquaintances do, the couple said in an interview. ” At the beginning of my tenure at the Court, I sought advice from my coworkers and others in the bench, and I was told that this kind of personal kindness from close personal friends was not reportable.”

The declaration continued,” I have made an effort to observe that counsel throughout my career and have always sought to cooperate with the publication guidelines.” The Judicial Conference committee in charge of financial reporting for the entire national courts just this past fortnight announced new guidance, so these instructions are now being changed. Or course, I intend to continue to heed this advice going forward.

Following Thomas’s’s statement, Ocasio-Cortez has demanded that Thomas be impeached for the unknown gifts and doesn’t seem to be backtracking on those demands.
