Ocasio-Cortez teased last week that there had been “conversations” about whether she could nab her party’s No. 2 spot. Raskin, who served on the Jan. 6 Committee, has been undergoing treatment for cancer. He has frequently lavished praise on Ocasio-Cortez and expressed a desire to use her to the “maximum effect on the committee.”
A star in the Democratic Party, Ocasio-Cortez is speculated to be contemplating a challenge against incumbent Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) in 2024. She has served on the House Oversight Committee during her prior two terms in the lower chamber and has shown a penchant for going viral during hearings.
During the last session of Congress, Ocasio-Cortez served as the vice chairwoman of the committee’s subpanel on civil rights and civil liberties.

Her tenure on the House Oversight Committee will be dominated by GOP rule. Republicans, led by Chairman James Comer (R-KY), are working to deploy the powerful panel to turn up the heat on the Biden administration. Already, Comer has announced the committee will examine Biden’s classified document controversy, and Republicans have been keen on digging into Hunter Biden’s business dealings.
Other topics on the agenda for Republicans include the origins of the COVID-19 respiratory illness and the crisis at the southern border.
