AOC to support Bowman at Bronx rally before close primary contest

Rep. Alexandria‍ Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is ‍planning to support Rep.⁢ Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) at a rally ‌in St. Mary’s Park, ‌New York, just ⁤days before the primary⁤ elections on June 25. The rally, which also features Sen. Bernie⁣ Sanders (I-VT), is intended to help Bowman in a challenging primary race against opponents‌ funded by the ⁤American Israel Public ‌Affairs Committee and other corporate interests due to his and his allies’ critical stance on Israel, ‍particularly in response to the⁢ recent conflict in Gaza. The event underscores ⁢the political effort to ⁣counteract significant lobbying money and maintain progress on their political agendas.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is joining her fellow New York lawmaker, Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY), at a rally this weekend to secure his seat in a heated primary race, which is looking to be an uphill battle for the incumbent Democrat.

Bowman will also be joined by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) at this rally, which will be located at St. Mary’s Park in New York. AOC shared the details of the rally on social media, writing that the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and other “corporate lobby interests” are donating millions of dollars to unseat Bowman in the primary, with all three politicians at this rally being critics of Israel amid the war in Gaza.

“We will not let them win,” AOC’s post on social media read. “In order to prevail, we must put out a call to all who care for progress and believe in taking action to advance and protect change.”

The rally is being held three days before New York’s primary elections on June 25, with the congresswoman reminding her followers on X of this timing.

Bowman’s criticism of Israel included claiming that the country used “propaganda” after the Hamas attack on Oct. 7, claiming that there was no evidence of Israeli victims being raped or of Israeli babies being beheaded. He has since backtracked these comments, stressing the need for Hamas to release its hostages and that he will “always stand against sexual violence.”

Polling data released last week on Bowman’s primary in New York’s 16th District, in which he is running against George Latimer, has the incumbent lawmaker at 31%, with Latimer at a double-digit lead at 48%. The poll was conducted among 425 likely Democratic primary voters with a margin of error of +/- 4.7%.

Sanders joining this rally comes as he has also been critical of Israel, accusing the country of violating international law in its war against Hamas and stating that it “should not be receiving the nickel in U.S. military aid.” He has also stated he will not attend Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress, which is scheduled for July 24.
