AOC cautions against Suozzi’s immigration strategy: ‘Can’t out-Republican a Republican
Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY) Returns to Office, Immigration Stance Sparks Debate
Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY) has reclaimed his position in office, much to the delight of centrist Democrats. However, his stance on immigration has raised concerns among some, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).
Suozzi emerged victorious in the special election for New York’s 3rd District, the same district he previously represented. He had served three terms before leaving in 2022 for an unsuccessful run for governor.
Suozzi’s departure in 2022 paved the way for George Santos, a Republican who was later removed from Congress. While Suozzi’s win brings the Democratic members’ count to 213 representatives in the House, not all of his fellow members are on board with his campaign’s immigration rhetoric.
Throughout his campaign, Suozzi referred to the influx of migrants attempting to cross the border illegally as an ”invasion” and emphasized the importance of Immigration and Customs Enforcement for national security. These comments come at a time when New York City, which neighbors Suozzi’s district, is grappling with a significant number of immigrants. According to Mayor Eric Adams, over 157,000 immigrants have arrived in New York City since last year, including more than 37,800 immigrants sent by Texas since August 2022, as stated in the latest press release from Gov. Greg Abbott’s office.
“Democrats should learn a lesson from NY-03,” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) wrote in a memo to fellow Democrats. “Quite simply, we risk losing the 2024 election if we do not seize this opportunity to go on offense on the issue of the border and turn the tables on Republicans.”
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez echoed Murphy’s sentiment, cautioning against trying to out-Republican Republicans. She believes that Suozzi’s approach may not be applicable to the rest of the country.
“We need to be very careful. You’re never going to out-Republican a Republican,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez told Politico. “I actually don’t think that it’s necessarily the playbook that would apply to the rest of the country.”
Speaker of the House Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) seemed to agree with Ocasio-Cortez, suggesting that Suozzi’s victory was based on a Republican talking point.
“Their candidate ran like a Republican,” Johnson said of Suozzi. “He sounded like a Republican, talking about the border and immigration, because everybody knows that the top issue that is on the concern, on the hearts, and minds of everybody.”
Despite the debate surrounding Suozzi’s campaign, other Democratic candidates have taken note and are heeding Murphy’s advice. One such candidate is Kyle Hill, who is running to replace Rep. Nicholas LaLota (R-NY) in New York’s 1st District.
“Congratulations Tom Suozzi and everyone who worked to win back NY-03. We’re gonna take this same energy and excitement and flip NY-01 this November,” Hill wrote on X.

How has Suozzi’s victory in the special election impacted the Democratic Party’s stance on immigration?
Suozzi’s victory in the special election is undoubtedly a cause for celebration among centrist Democrats. However, his stance on immigration has raised eyebrows and ignited a debate within the party. One notable critic of Suozzi’s immigration rhetoric is Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, also from New York.
Suozzi’s return to office in the 3rd District of New York marks a significant political comeback for the former representative. He had previously served three terms before leaving in 2022 to run for governor, a bid that unfortunately ended in failure. His departure left a vacuum that was temporarily filled by Republican George Santos, who was later removed from Congress.
While Suozzi’s win has bolstered the Democratic representation in the House, his campaign’s stance on immigration has not been universally embraced by his fellow party members. Throughout his campaign, Suozzi adopted a strong rhetoric highlighting the issue of illegal border crossings, referring to it as an “invasion.” He also emphasized the importance of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for national security.
These comments have come at a time when New York City, which is in close proximity to Suozzi’s district, is grappling with a significant number of immigrants. According to Mayor Eric Adams, over 157,000 immigrants have arrived in the city since last year. It is worth noting that more than 37,800 immigrants were sent to New York by Texas since August 2022, as stated in the latest press release from Governor Greg Abbott’s office.
The divide among Democrats regarding Suozzi’s immigration stance reflects the broader debate within the party on how to approach immigration policy. Some argue for a more compassionate and inclusive approach, focusing on providing pathways to citizenship and addressing the root causes of migration. Others, like Suozzi, believe in prioritizing border security and maintaining strict immigration enforcement.
Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent progressive voice within the party, has criticized Suozzi’s rhetoric, expressing her concern that it could contribute to a hostile environment for immigrants and perpetuate divisive narratives. She advocates for a more progressive and humanitarian approach to immigration that prioritizes the well-being and human rights of migrants.
The debate sparked by Suozzi’s immigration stance highlights the ideological diversity within the Democratic Party. As the party seeks to reconcile these differences, it is crucial to remember the shared goals of inclusivity, fairness, and justice. Finding common ground and fostering productive discussions will be essential to navigating the complexities of immigration policy and addressing the concerns raised by both Suozzi’s supporters and critics.
