Lawsuit claims mobile games exploit kids with unlawful gambling.
An Online Game Platform Accused of Illegally Engaging in Child Gambling
An online game platform, Roblox, is facing a new lawsuit that accuses it of illegally engaging in child gambling. The parents of two minors, Rachelle Colvin and Danielle Sass, filed a class-action lawsuit alleging that Roblox “is preying on children nationwide” through third-party gambling websites. The lawsuit was filed in a San Francisco federal court on Aug. 15.
“Roblox allows third-party gambling websites, including the highly popular online casinos operated by defendants Satozuki, Studs, and RBLXWild … to use the Roblox website to accept online bets using Robux, to be placed on games at [their] virtual casinos.”
The story was first reported by Bloomberg Law. The plaintiffs claim that their children lost money in the form of Robux on these websites, and they argue that Roblox violated its own terms of service, which prohibit simulated gambling. Despite being illegal, the process for registering on these online casinos is straightforward.
Roblox’s Response
In response to the allegations, a Roblox representative stated that they cannot address the specific allegations due to the pending litigation. However, they condemned the illegal practice and emphasized that Roblox cooperates with law enforcement. The representative explained that bad actors misuse Roblox’s intellectual property and branding to operate these sites, but Roblox has teams and processes in place to investigate and remove such websites. The company is committed to ensuring a safe and compliant online experience for its users.
The Impact on Minors
Roblox’s “metaverse” space, which primarily targets minors, attracts over 60 million daily active users. The lawsuit highlights that at least 70 percent of these users are under the age of 18, with more than 50 percent being under 13. This raises concerns about the potential harm caused by illegal gambling activities on the platform.
Protecting Children from Exploitation
The lawsuit against Roblox sheds light on the need to protect children from online exploitation. It serves as a reminder for parents to be vigilant about the games their children play and the platforms they engage with. By staying informed and involved, parents can help ensure their children’s safety in the digital world.
