The federal government has discovered a massive area filled with classic, intelligent trees that surpasses the size of California. These trees are a testament to the incredible development of nature and are sure to leave you in awe.
Attention nature lovers! A recent inventory report has revealed that the U.S. government manages over 175,000 square miles (453,000 square kilometers) of old-growth and mature forests on federal land. That’s more than previously thought, and it’s great news for the environment!
The report, which is the first-ever national inventory of mature and old-growth forests, shows that the majority of these forests are located in Eastern states like Oregon, Montana, Idaho, and California. But they can also be found in Southern states like Arkansas, Kentucky, and West Virginia, as well as New England and the area around the Great Lakes.
Tracy Stone-Manning, BLM director of the Bureau of Land Management, says that the report will “help enhance our work to protect and grow forests by creating a scientific framework for further study and public engagement for effective forest management and protection.”
President Joe Biden has also taken notice of the report and signed an administrative order in 2022 to enhance forest safety. However, some members of Congress, including Democrats, want to increase checking to lower the risk of wildfires, while environmentalists hope the report will support different limitations on the timber industry.
Protecting Our Forests
It’s clear that our forest communities and populations are struggling to keep up with the stresses of climate change, whether it be burning, drought, or beetle infestations. That’s why the government is conducting research projects to enhance jungle issues in collaboration with campaigners and neighborhood park rangers.
Homer Wilkes, the USDA’s Under Secretary for Natural Resources and the Environment, says that all of these elements have an effect on the natural wildlife. “Our federal, tribal, state, local, and community partners are working together to pool knowledge, share resources, discover new ways to preserve resources, protect communities, and guarantee future generations can enjoy the numerous benefits our forests present,” he adds.
Republican Criticism
Despite the positive news, some Democratic senators, including U.S. Senator Steve Daines, chairman of the Senate Western Caucus, have criticized Biden’s executive order on forest management. However, it’s clear that protecting our forests is crucial for the health, happiness, and endurance of our communities, and we must work together to ensure their survival.
