Phoenix Police arrested a suspect in connection with the recent death of a 74-year-old man. According to reports, authorities arrested 41-year-old Marcus Williams this week. Earlier this month, Williams was accused of punching 74-year-old Juanito Falcon, who was on a morning walk. Williams immediately fled the scene.
Falcon fell and hit his head on the floor, which ultimately fractured his skull. He died from his injuries in the hospital two days later. Police said there was “no apparent reason” for the attack.
“We don’t know why this occurred, which is why it makes it even more tragic,” Sgt. Ann Justus of the Phoneix Police Department said. “And sometimes we just don’t ever find out the why. At this time we don’t have any reason to believe this is a hate crime or racially motivated. And until we have evidence that leads to that way, we just can’t direct this investigation that way.”
Meanwhile, hate crimes and attacks against Asian-Americans continue to rise across the nation. Falcon, a Filipino-American, was described as a loving father and grandfather.
Williams was charged with second-degree murder.
