An Arizona Teenager Found Safe in Montana After Disappearing for Four Years
An Arizona teenager who vanished from her home in 2019 has been discovered safe and sound in Montana, over 1,000 miles away.
This week, Alicia Navarro, now 18, bravely walked into a Montana police station just 40 miles from the Canadian border and introduced herself, according to the Associated Press.
“I ran away. I will be back, I swear. I’m sorry.”
Jessica Nunez reported her daughter missing after she disappeared at the age of 14 on September 15, 2019. Navarro left a heartfelt note before leaving, expressing her intention to return. Her worried mother suspected that Navarro may have been enticed away by someone she met online. Additionally, it was revealed that Navarro had been diagnosed as high-functioning on the autism spectrum.
Navarro’s disappearance sparked a nationwide search, with the FBI receiving thousands of tips over the years. Glendale, Arizona, police spokesman Jose Santiago shared this information during a press conference.
“Alicia went missing in September of 2019, and for more than four years, our dedicated detectives have followed up on THOUSANDS of leads,” the Glendale Police Department wrote on Facebook. “This week, Alicia walked into a police department in a small town in Montana and identified herself. At that point, Federal partners, local police, and our detectives here at Glendale Police began their investigation into this individual. Through our interviews, along with family members, we are confident that the now 18-year-old young lady is indeed Alicia Navarro.”
However, the police department emphasized that the case was not yet closed.
“We are continuing to investigate her whereabouts for the last four years and will do so alongside our Federal partners. Alicia is asking for privacy at this time. We are thankful we can bring some type of closure to her family. We are also thankful she appears to be in good health and happy,” they wrote.
During the press conference, Santiago assured everyone that Navarro was safe, healthy, and happy. He confirmed that she had not been harmed and was not held against her will during her time missing. Furthermore, she does not face any criminal charges.

“She is not in any kind of trouble,” Santiago emphasized.
Lieutenant Scott Waite also spoke, describing the emotionally overwhelming reunion between Navarro and her mother. Navarro expressed deep apologies for the distress she had caused her mother.
Nunez, Navarro’s mother, expressed her gratitude to God for her daughter’s safe return in a heartfelt video on Facebook.
“I want to give glory to God for answering prayers and for this miracle,” Nunez said. “For everyone who has missing loved ones, I want you to use this case as an example. Miracles do exist. Never lose hope and always fight.”
