A recent CBS News-YouGov poll reveals a divide among Arizona voters regarding former President Donald Trump’s potential response to a possible election loss in the upcoming 2024 election. The poll indicates that 49% of likely Trump voters believe he should accept the results regardless of the outcome, while 47% think he should challenge the results if Vice President Kamala Harris wins. Conversely, a significant majority (82%) of likely Harris voters feel she should accept the election results, with only 12% advocating for a challenge if she loses to Trump. The context includes ongoing legal ramifications from Trump’s past election challenges, which have led to several indictments of his allies.

Former President Donald Trump disputed the results of the 2020 election in its immediate aftermath, launching various unsuccessful legal challenges, and his supporters in Arizona are split on whether he should do that again if he loses next month’s election.
A CBS News-YouGov poll shows that a narrow plurality of likely Trump voters in the Grand Canyon State believe Trump should accept the results, no matter who wins, (49%), while 47% believe that he should challenge the results if Vice President Kamala Harris emerges victorious.
Among likely Harris voters in the state, the vast majority (82%) believe she should accept the results no matter who wins, while 12% think she should challenge the results if Trump does.
Trump’s legal challenges in Arizona after he lost the 2020 election to President Joe Biden led to indictments of several political allies earlier this year, among other challenges in other states. The former president’s legal disputes over the 2020 election have also garnered indictments in Georgia and in federal court in Washington, D.C.
Trump said during the presidential debate in June that he would accept the results of the 2024 election if it was “a fair and legal and good election.” He has softened his language about the 2020 election in recent years but has still avoided saying he lost.
While it is unknown if Trump would challenge the results if he loses Arizona again, the poll indicates he may not have to think about that scenario. In the survey, Trump leads Harris, 51%-48%, in Arizona.
Arizona voted for Trump in 2016 and had voted Republican in the presidential race only one time since 1948 before 2020, when Biden narrowly defeated Trump en route to an Electoral College victory.
In the RealClearPolitics polling average in the Grand Canyon State, Trump leads Harris, 48.8%-47.4%, and the Cook Political Report has rated the state as a “toss up.”
