Arizona’s Democratic Secretary Of State Running For Governor

Arizona Democratic Secretary of State Katie Hobbs announced Wednesday that she is running for governor.

Hobbs, who took office in 2018, has consistently pushed back against the baseless claims of election fraud echoed by former President Donald Trump and his Republican allies, and has criticized a GOP-led audit of ballots in the state’s largest county.

In her announcement video, Hobbs discussed Arizona’s successful election in 2020 despite the audit and Republican assertions that the election was rigged in favor of President Joe Biden, who won the state by approximately 11,000 votes.

“We had a job to do, and that job was simple: Count every vote,” Hobbs said. “When you’re under attack, some would have you believe you have two choices: To fight or give in. But there’s a third option: Get the job done. The other side isn’t offering policies to make our lives better. They’re offering conspiracies that only make our lives worse.” (RELATED: Arizona SoS: Giving Ballots To Auditors Poses ‘Grave’ Security Concerns)

“In 2020, against all odds, in the middle of a pandemic, we proved that democracy works,” she added.

Also running is former Obama administration official Marco López Jr., who announced his candidacy in May. Republican State Treasurer Kimberly Yee and Kari Lake, a local news anchor who launched her candidacy Tuesday night, are also vying to succeed Republican Gov. Doug Ducey, who is term-limited and unable to seek reelection.
