Arlington GOP to welcome Trump back during White House visit with Biden – Washington Examiner
In an upcoming event on Wednesday in Washington, D.C., President-elect Donald Trump will receive a warm welcome from supporters organized by Arlington GOP Chairman Matthew Hurtt. The initiative aims to create a more organized reception compared to past gatherings, influenced by Hurtt’s experiences from Trump’s first White House visit with then-President Barack Obama in 2016. Hurtt expressed optimism that the meeting between Trump and current President Joe Biden could foster national unity, although attendance numbers are uncertain and there may be counter-protests. The welcome event is set to take place in Lafayette Square at 10 a.m. Eastern.
Arlington GOP to welcome Trump back during White House visit with Biden
President-elect Donald Trump will be greeted by supporters holding a “welcome back” event in Washington, D.C., ahead of his meeting with President Joe Biden on Wednesday.
The event for the president-elect is being organized by Arlington GOP Chairman Matthew Hurtt, who told the Washington Examiner that he was inspired to host it after he attended Trump’s first White House visit with then-President Barack Obama in 2016. Hurtt noted that while he and several others visited Washington, D.C., to support Trump after winning his first victory, there was a level of disorganization among those offering support for the president-elect. This time around, however, is meant to be a more organized effort to support Trump.
WHAT HAPPENS NOW THAT TRUMP IS PRESIDENT-ELECT
Hurtt also told the Washington Examiner that he believes the meeting between Biden and Trump could be a “tremendous” opportunity to bring unity within the country. While it is customary for the current president to meet with the president-elect shortly after the presidential election, Hurtt stated he would welcome any unity that this meeting might provide for the nation.
It is currently unknown how many people will attend the welcome event for Trump, though Hurtt told the Washington Examiner that people are welcome to message the Arlington GOP on social media to become a co-host of the event. Hurtt also said he does not know of any counter-protests that could oppose the Arlington GOP’s event come Wednesday but that he is expecting one, given the level of protests that occur in Washington, D.C.
Trump’s welcoming event will be held in Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C., and will begin at 10 a.m. Eastern on Wednesday.
Trump’s meeting with Biden was announced a few days ago following Trump’s victory over Vice President Kamala Harris. The president has also revealed that he plans to attend Trump’s inauguration in January 2025. In contrast, Trump refused to concede the 2020 election between him and Biden and opted not to attend the inauguration event in 2021.
Following the election last week, Biden encouraged the country to “bring down the temperature,” adding that he hopes the results of the 2024 election “lay to rest the question about the integrity of the American electoral system.” Biden had also called for the nation to “lower the temperature in politics” following the first assassination attempt against Trump in July, which was made at a rally Trump hosted in Butler, Pennsylvania.
