The Army Football Team Unveils Special Uniforms to Honor Legendary Infantry Unit
The Army football team has revealed their striking new uniforms for the upcoming Army-Navy game. These uniforms pay tribute to the 3rd Infantry Division, also known as the “Rock of the Marne,” a name earned during a crucial battle in World War I.
This year also marks the 20th anniversary of the division’s remarkable “thunder run” to remove Saddam Hussein during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The uniforms were unveiled in a captivating video that showcases their unique design and symbolism.
The Nike uniforms are tan throughout, representing the desert nature of the war and reminiscent of the camouflage pattern worn by troops during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The player numbers and lettering on the uniforms mimic the font used on Army vehicles’ “bumper numbers,” as reported by the Military Times.

In March 2003, the 3rd ID achieved a remarkable feat by covering 240 miles from Kuwait to Baghdad in just two days. The Washington Post’s William Branigin, who was embedded with the 3rd ID at the time, described it as the fastest, farthest, and largest advance by an armored invasion force in history.
The division played a crucial role in capturing the Iraqi capital and overthrowing Saddam Hussein’s regime. Formed on November 21, 1917, during World War I, the 3rd ID earned its nickname, the “Rock of the Marne,” by helping thwart the last German offensive of the war along the Marne River.
The Army football team’s helmets feature the division’s mascot, Rocky the bulldog, further emphasizing their connection to the 3rd ID.

The Army team’s uniforms not only honor the 3rd ID’s offensive achievements in Iraq but also their defensive prowess at the Marne. These qualities will be crucial as the Army team faces off against Navy in the upcoming game.
The Navy team’s uniforms for the game pay tribute to the U.S. Submarine Force, known as the “Silent Service,” as reported by Stars and Stripes.

In last year’s Army-Navy game, Army emerged victorious with a thrilling 20-17 win in double overtime. It was the first time in the history of their 123 meetings that the game had gone into overtime.
This year’s game will take place on December 9 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. Army’s recent win against the Air Force Academy has put them in a strong position, and if they defeat Navy next month, they will secure the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy for the 10th time.
The Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy is awarded to the team that beats the other two service academies. Air Force has won it 21 times, followed by Navy at 16 and Army at nine. Army last won the trophy in 2020 and has also claimed victory in 2017 and 2018.
