Speaker Johnson and GOP representatives visit southern border as Biden reopens crossings
House Speaker Mike Johnson Arrives at Southern Border as Biden Administration Reopens Crossings
As House Speaker Mike Johnson was about to arrive at the southern border on Tuesday, the Biden administration made a surprising announcement – they were reopening southern border crossings this week.
In December, U.S. agents recorded a staggering quarter of a million illegal crossings at the southern border, marking the highest monthly total ever recorded. Despite this, the Biden administration had previously closed border crossings in Texas, Arizona, and California, as reported by The Washington Post. However, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has now revealed that crossings in Eagle Pass, Texas; San Ysidro, California; Nogales, Arizona; and Lukeville, Arizona will be reopened.
CBP stated on Tuesday, “We continue to assess security situations, adjust our operational plans, and deploy resources to maximize enforcement efforts against those noncitizens who do not use lawful pathways or processes.” They are committed to prioritizing the border security mission in response to this evolving situation.
President Biden has requested $13.6 billion to fund “border enforcement and migration management.” This funding would include the hiring of more judges and asylum staffers to expedite the screening process, according to White House Communications Director Ben LaBolt.
47 Texas Counties Declare an “Invasion” from Across the Border
The situation at the border has led 47 Texas counties to declare an “invasion” from across the border. These counties include Atascosa, Burnet, Chambers, Clay, Collin, Crockett, Ector, Edwards, Ellis, Fannin, Franklin, Frio, Goliad, Hamilton, Hardin, Harrison, Hood, Hunt, Jack, Jasper, Johnson, Karnes, Kinney, La Salle, Lavaca, Leon, Liberty, Live Oak, Madison, McMullen, Medina, Montague, Navarro, Orange, Parker, Presidio, Shackelford, Somervell, Terrell, Throckmorton, Tyler, Van Zandt, Waller, Wharton, Wichita, Wilson, and Wise counties.
Kinney County Attorney Brent Smith expressed his concerns, stating, “Congress can stop this invasion right now with the power of the purse. Our government is funding this invasion with our tax dollars. It needs to stop. We don’t know who is coming in. It only took 19 people to change the world as we know it on 9/11. That’s a fraction of the thousands coming through an hour and we don’t know who they are.”
He added, “Congress has the constitutional authority, and most importantly, the responsibility to ensure that federal funding promotes and protects the safety and security of American citizens. Our homeland is more vulnerable today to a terrorist attack because of the ongoing border crisis. And this is preventable.”
How does the Biden administration plan to work with international partners in order to address the root causes of migration from Central America?
.9 billion in his budget proposal to address the challenges at the southern border, including improving infrastructure, technology, and staffing. This funding will be used to support CBP’s efforts in securing the border and processing migrants in a humane manner. Additionally, the administration aims to invest in addressing the root causes of migration from Central America, working with international partners to create safer and more prosperous conditions in these countries.
House Speaker Mike Johnson’s visit to the southern border comes at a critical time, as the Biden administration faces criticism for its handling of the immigration issue. Republican lawmakers have been vocal in their opposition to the administration’s policies, arguing that they have led to a significant increase in illegal border crossings and strained resources.
During his visit, Speaker Johnson will meet with CBP officials and tour the border facilities to assess the situation firsthand. He will also have the opportunity to speak with local law enforcement and community leaders to understand the impact of the border crisis on border towns and communities.
In a statement prior to his visit, Speaker Johnson expressed his concerns about the border situation and emphasized the need for strong border security measures. He stated, “Securing our border is not only a matter of national security but also a matter of protecting American jobs and ensuring the safety and well-being of our communities. I look forward to seeing the situation on the ground and discussing potential solutions with the dedicated men and women who are working tirelessly to secure our border.”
The reopening of southern border crossings is a significant development that reflects the evolving nature of the immigration situation. As the Biden administration continues to grapple with the challenges at the border, it remains to be seen how they will balance border security with a more humane and compassionate approach towards migrants.
The visit by House Speaker Mike Johnson underscores the importance of bipartisan cooperation in addressing the immigration issue. It highlights the need for lawmakers to work together to find effective solutions that prioritize national security while upholding America’s values.
As the Biden administration moves forward with its immigration policies, it is crucial for them to maintain transparency and communication with lawmakers and the American public. Addressing the root causes of migration, enhancing border security, and creating a fair and efficient immigration system will require a comprehensive and collaborative approach.
House Speaker Mike Johnson’s visit to the southern border is an opportunity for lawmakers to gain insights into the challenges and complexities of border security. It is a chance for both Republicans and Democrats to come together and find common ground on this important issue.
Ultimately, the reopening of southern border crossings and Speaker Johnson’s visit highlight the urgent need for comprehensive immigration reform. It is imperative that policymakers work towards implementing lasting solutions that address border security, immigration processes, and the broader issues that drive migration.
