As Tensions Rise With China, McCarthy Huddles With Taiwanese President in Show of Democratic Solidarity
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R) recently attended a congressional summit with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California. During the summit, McCarthy emphasized that the relationship between the United States and Taiwan is stronger than ever. Meanwhile, Tsai appreciated the “presence and unwavering support” of McCarthy and other American lawmakers at the summit, as it reassured the people of Taiwan that they are not isolated or alone.
The meeting between McCarthy and Tsai drew criticism from China, which threatened to fight back resolutely against the summit as they believe that it threatens the “one-China principle” and China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. China also launched military drills and froze diplomatic channels with the U.S. government in response to the summit.
The Taiwanese president’s visit to the United States served as an opportunity for her to meet with the remaining allies of Taiwan amid the looming threats from China. However, Biden administration officials have repeatedly walked back President Joe Biden’s statements of support for Taiwan, and Tsai was not scheduled to meet any high-ranking Biden administration officials during her U.S. stay.
Nonetheless, the meeting between McCarthy and Tsai demonstrates the bipartisan support for Taiwan in Congress, although the parties have been at odds about U.S. military assistance to Taiwan. McCarthy believes that Biden shares the House Republicans’ commitment to boosting Taiwan’s defenses through arms shipments.
Despite the celebratory mood with Taiwanese Americans outside the library, security remained tight, with guards struggling to contain the hundreds of reporters in attendance.
Taiwanese President Tsai expressed concern about the heavy-handed political propaganda campaign already underway for next year’s presidential elections, when the CCP is hoping to sway the Taiwanese to elect a pro-Beijing candidate from among Tsai’s opposition.
McCarthy kept the details of the summit close to the vest, although hundreds of reporters attended the event, including dozens from Taiwan.
