US aims to turn Ukraine into the next Israel amidst its struggle for survival.
US and NATO Leaders Seek Israeli-Style Security Agreement with Ukraine
As Ukraine continues to battle Russia, US and NATO leaders are exploring the possibility of creating a security agreement with the country similar to Israel’s relationship with the US. While NATO membership is not currently on the table, a security agreement would allow Western allies to prioritize arms transfers and advanced technology to Ukraine. The agreement would not make NATO a party to any conflicts with Russia, but would allow for continued foreign assistance to Ukraine.
President Biden Discusses Concept with Polish President
President Joe Biden discussed the Israeli-model concept with Polish President Andrzej Duda during a visit to Poland in February. The proposal is now on the agenda for the NATO summit in July in Vilnius, Lithuania, and is expected to be signed after the summit. The security agreement is intended to discourage Russian President Vladimir Putin from prolonging the war in hopes of weakening Ukraine’s support from the West.
Support from G7 Leaders
During the G7 summit, President Biden expressed support for training Ukrainian pilots to fly Western jet fighters, including American F-16s. The United Kingdom has pledged to give Ukraine hundreds of long-range attack drones, while Germany has agreed to give billion in military aid and France will deliver more armored vehicles and light tanks.
“Ukraine needs ironclad and lasting security guarantees,” said Andriy Yermak, a top aide to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
