A devastating accident occurred when a bus carrying students from a Long Island high school overturned, resulting in the loss of one life and numerous injuries.
On Thursday, tragedy struck as a charter bus transporting students from Farmingdale High School in Nassau County to a band camp in Greeley, Pennsylvania, flipped over. Reports indicate that one person has tragically lost their life, and many others, including five students in critical condition, have sustained injuries.
According to reports, the bus, carrying approximately 30 passengers, crashed on Interstate 84 in Orange County, New York, around 1:30 p.m.
While the full extent of the injuries is still unknown, it has been reported that “at least five teens” are in critical condition.
The identity of the deceased individual has not been disclosed, but it has been confirmed that they were an adult.
The New York State Police announced on X (formerly known as Twitter) that the westbound road at Exit 15, near the town of Wawayanda, has been closed for investigation purposes.
Video footage of the aftermath suggests that the bus may have rolled down a slope before tipping onto its side.
Governor Kathy Hochul (D-N.Y.) has dispatched the Division of Homeland Security to assist local authorities in their investigation.
“I have been briefed on the tragedy in Orange County where a bus filled with high school students was involved in an accident, leading to injuries and one fatality… We are grateful for the first responders whose speedy action saved lives and we will continue to support them however necessary. Our hearts are with all who are impacted by this horrific situation,” Hochul said in a statement.
The cause of the crash remains unknown at this time.
