The National Immigration Institute of⁤ Mexico reported on Friday that ⁤16 migrants, including three children, lost their lives in the accident, while 29 others sustained injuries.

Initially, the institute had reported ⁣18 deaths, but ⁢upon further investigation, it was discovered that the count was inaccurate due to ‌dismembered remains.⁢ The true ‌death toll was ⁢confirmed ⁣to be 16.

Disturbing images shared on social media depict the bus overturned on ⁣its side along a ⁢curved section of the highway.

The institute also revealed that approximately ‌55 migrants, mostly from ‌Venezuela, were on board the ill-fated bus.

This tragic incident⁢ follows another deadly accident last week, where 10 Cuban migrants lost their lives and 17 others were injured after‌ a freight truck they were traveling in ⁢crashed near the⁢ Guatemala border.

According‌ to⁤ the Institute,‌ the driver of the truck, which was carrying 27 migrants at the time, ⁤was‌ speeding and lost control. The driver fled the scene.

Mexican authorities typically prohibit migrants without legal‍ documentation from purchasing regular⁣ bus tickets,‍ leading them to resort to‍ unsafe alternatives⁢ such ‌as poorly-driven trucks or hitchhiking on passing ⁢vehicles.

Salomón Jara Cruz, the governor of Oaxaca, expressed his condolences and pledged support to the victims and ⁤their ⁤families in a Spanish-language post.

“We deeply regret the fatal accident‌ that occurred on the Oaxaca-Cuacnopalan highway, in which several⁤ migrants died,” he‌ said. “Our condolences to the families of the deceased and all our solidarity and ⁣support to the injured.”

What actions should governments ‍in the region take to address‌ the ⁢root ‌causes of ⁤migration and improve safety measures for migrants traveling through Mexico

Om/alerts

The Mexican government has faced criticism for its handling of the migrant crisis, with many migrants undertaking dangerous journeys to seek asylum ‌or better economic opportunities ‍in the United States.

Earlier this year, Mexico implemented stricter immigration policies under ⁤pressure from the U.S. government, resulting in increased deportations and detentions of ‍migrants.

These policies have forced many migrants to resort to risky methods of travel, such as overcrowded and unsafe vehicles.

Human rights organizations have called on the ⁤Mexican government to provide safer migration options for those seeking refuge or a better life.

The recent series of tragic accidents involving migrants highlights the urgent need for comprehensive immigration reform ‍and improved safety ⁤measures for migrants traveling through Mexico.

It is crucial⁢ for governments in the region to work together and address the root causes of migration, such as poverty, violence, and lack of economic opportunities, in order to prevent more
