According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, five fires now rage uncontrollably in Los Angeles County, with over 29,000 acres burned. The Palisades Fire and Eaton Fire, which began on January 7, are reportedly still at 0% containment. The Hurst Fire, which also began the same day, has burned over 855 acres and is at 10% containment.
Two fires that started on January 8 have also caused significant damage in a short period of time. The Lidia Fire has burned 348 acres and is at 40% containment, while the Sunset Fire has burned 43 acres and is at 0% containment.
At least five people have died from the Eaton Fire in northeast Los Angeles, according to NBC 4 Los Angeles. The circumstances involving their deaths have yet to be disclosed. Additionally, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone confirmed to local media that there were “a number of significant injuries” to people who did not heed evacuation warnings. Marrone did not provide any details about the number of injured victims.
Four firefighters were also reportedly injured from the fires, according to California Wildfire Tracking.
Over 130,000 people have been forced to evacuate due to the blazes, and numerous people have lost their homes. Multiple celebrities have taken to social media to report that their houses were destroyed in the fire. So far, over 2000 structures have been burned, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Currently, more than 7,500 firefighters have been deployed to help contain the wildfires, Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a post on X. He also pleaded with residents to listen to officials and heed evacuation warnings.
“More than 7,500 firefighting personnel are on the ground working with local and federal partners to respond to California’s ongoing historic wildfires, Newsom said. “Southern California residents — please remain vigilant tonight. Listen to local officials and be ready to evacuate if you’re near impacted areas.”
