Attorney Lin Wood Surrenders Law License Amidst Disciplinary Proceedings

Renowned attorney Lin Wood, famous for his attempts to overturn former President Donald Trump’s 2020 election loss, has made the decision to relinquish his law license rather than face potential disbarment.

On Tuesday, Wood formally requested officials in his home state of Georgia to “retire” his law license due to “disciplinary proceedings pending against me.” In his request, Wood acknowledged the consequences of surrendering his license, stating that he will be “prohibited from practicing law in this State and in any other state or jurisdiction” and will not be eligible to reapply for admission.

Challenging Election Results and Facing Disciplinary Actions

Wood has faced scrutiny in several states for promoting baseless claims of widespread election fraud that allegedly led to President Joe Biden’s victory.

Having been a licensed attorney in Georgia since 1977, Wood is now retired and has maintained a clean disciplinary record, as confirmed by the State Bar of Georgia’s website.

A spokesperson for the bar has confirmed that two complaints against Wood have been dismissed. The Office of the General Counsel, in a court filing, expressed satisfaction with Wood’s retirement, stating that it has achieved the objectives of disciplinary action, including safeguarding the public, maintaining the integrity of the judicial system, and upholding the standards of the legal profession.

Georgia officials conducted an investigation into Wood’s conduct and deliberated on whether to disbar him. Earlier this year, a disciplinary trial was held for Wood, during which the retired lawyer argued that the bar violated his constitutional rights by requesting a mental health evaluation as part of the investigation.

Grand Jury Investigation and Living Situation Controversy

In August 2022, Wood was summoned to testify before the Fulton County special grand jury, which was investigating attempts to overturn Georgia’s 2020 general election results. The jury reportedly recommended multiple indictments on conspiracy and racketeering charges, although no specific defendants have been named. The investigation involved interviews with over 50 witnesses, including prominent GOP figures like Rudy Giuliani and Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC).

Wood also faced scrutiny regarding his residency. In 2021, the Georgia secretary of state’s office initiated an investigation into Wood’s living arrangements during the 2020 election. Despite having moved to South Carolina, Wood continued to practice law in Georgia. However, officials ultimately determined that he did not violate Georgia election laws.
