Australian swimmer takes a dig at U.S. after World Championships: ‘Defeating America feels amazing’
Australian Swimmer Celebrates Victory Over United States
Australian swimmer Cate Campbell made headlines after the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. In a recent interview, she expressed her joy at not hearing the American national anthem on the first day of competition. Campbell, who did not compete in Fukuoka, took a few jabs at the United States, calling their swimmers “sore losers.” Despite China’s success in the gold medal count, Campbell was thrilled to see the Americans take a back seat.
According to Campbell, “Australia coming out on top of the world is one thing, but it is just so much sweeter beating America. The first night of competition, we did not have to hear ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ ring out through the stadium. I cannot tell you how happy that made me. If I hear that song again it will be too soon. Bring on Paris (2024 Olympics). That’s all I have to say to the U.S. Stop being sore losers.”
She also complained about a U.S. team tradition of ringing a cowbell as team members walk out for their events. Campbell said, “The U.S. have this internal cowbell they ring. As someone leaves to go to the competition pool, they ring out, ‘USA, USA.’ I have never wanted to punch someone more and steal the cowbell. I really hope someone did.”
American Olympian Lilly King responded to Campbell’s comments on Twitter, defending her team’s support for their teammates. King said, “Sorry we aren’t so uptight we can’t cheer for our teammates as they walkout for events. See you in Paris.”

United States Falls Short in Gold Medal Count
The 2023 World Aquatics Championships marked the first time since 2001 that the United States did not top the gold medal count. China finished with 20 gold medals, Australia with 15, and the United States with seven. However, the U.S. won the overall medal count with 44 medals in total. Australia finished third with 30 medals.
Contrary to Campbell’s claims, American swimmers have shown good sportsmanship in the past. Michael Phelps, a veteran world champion, demonstrated this during the event. Despite having one of his own world records broken, Phelps cheered for the young French swimming champion Leon Marchand and even presented him with his gold medal.
