Two Minors Charged in Connection to Deadly Shooting at Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Parade
Authorities announced on Friday that two minors have been charged in connection to the tragic shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade earlier this week. The incident, which turned a celebration into a nightmare, resulted in the death of a 43-year-old woman and left more than 20 people, including 11 children, injured.
The two juveniles, whose identities have not been disclosed by the police, were charged on Thursday and are currently being held on gun-related and resisting arrest charges at a juvenile facility. However, a third minor was released after investigators determined that they were not involved in the shooting.
The Jackson County, Missouri, Family Court Division stated that additional charges are expected in the future as the investigation by the Kansas City Police Department continues.
Dispute Between Individuals, Not Terrorism
During a news conference on Thursday, KC Police Chief Stacey Graves clarified that the initial findings of the shooting indicate that there was no connection to terrorism or homegrown violent extremism. Instead, it appeared to be a dispute between several individuals that escalated into gunfire.
Immediately after the shooting, three individuals were detained by the police, and firearms were recovered from the scene. More than 800 law enforcement officers were present in and around Union Station when the shots rang out.
Video footage shared on social media showed several parade goers tackling a man who was running through the crowd after the shooting. The bystanders managed to restrain the man for about 30 seconds until the arrival of the police. One witness even reported seeing a gun falling away from the man as he was tackled to the ground. It remains unclear if the person apprehended by the parade goers is one of the charged juveniles.
The victim who tragically lost her life due to the gunshot wounds was identified as Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a DJ for a Kansas City radio station and a mother of two children.
