Husband identified as killer in ‘Lady of the Dunes’ cold case.
Authorities Identify Husband as Killer in Decades-Old Cold Case
Authorities in Massachusetts made a significant breakthrough in one of the state’s most famous cold cases. The mutilated body of a woman, known as the “Lady of the Dunes,” was discovered on Cape Cod nearly 50 years ago. Now, it has been revealed that her husband was responsible for her death.
The announcement by Cape and Islands District Attorney Robert Galibois brings closure to a long-standing mystery. Just last October, officials finally identified the woman as Ruth Marie Terry of Tennessee. She was brutally killed in 1974, suffering from blunt force trauma to the skull.
Since then, investigators have turned their attention to Terry’s late husband, Guy Rockwell Muldavin. Muldavin had married her just a few months before she disappeared. He was also a prime suspect in the deaths of another wife and a stepdaughter in Seattle during the 1960s. Muldavin passed away in 2002.

State police discovered that Muldavin had driven Terry’s vehicle back from a trip to Tennessee, claiming that she had passed away. However, her family never saw her again.
Based on the investigation into Terry’s death, authorities concluded that Muldavin was the killer. However, they have not released further details about the evidence uncovered.
The murder of the “Lady of the Dunes” has been one of Massachusetts’ most enduring and frustrating mysteries. In July 1974, a young girl stumbled upon the woman’s naked body on a beach blanket in Provincetown. Her hands had been severed to prevent identification through fingerprints, and her skull was crushed, almost decapitating her. Authorities believe she was killed several weeks before her body was discovered.
In October, Joseph Bonavolonta, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Boston division, revealed that Terry’s identity was determined using investigative genealogy. This method combines DNA analysis with traditional genealogy research and historical records.
Terry, who also went by aliases such as Teri Marie Vizina, Terry M. Vizina, and Teri Shannon, left behind a haunting legacy that has finally seen some justice.
