Autopsy Studies of COVID-19 Illness Rule Out Extensive Myocarditis

There has been concern that SARS-CoV-2 infection in humans could result in heart inflammation, especially due to the beta-coronavirus loading demonstrated in laboratory models in the original Baric study. Some epidemiologic studies suggested that hospitalized patients were developing myocarditis with the respiratory illness, but none of these studies were confirmed with clinical adjudication or autopsy. However, various entities screened for myocarditis on clinical grounds in 2020, and myocaritis was not found to be more common than baseline levels.

The recent autopsy studies show that the virus may be found in heart tissue, but it was not causing significant inflammation. The review suggests that COVID-19 illness is not a cause of fatal myocarditis. On the other hand, vaccines used in America (Pfizer, Moderna, Janssen, Novavax) have been demonstrated to cause myocarditis as reported in peer-reviewed literature. Therefore, immediate access to the CDC COVID-19 vaccine administration database for physicians and other providers who are managing the burgeoning caseload of myocarditis is necessary to improve the epidemiology of COVID-19 vaccine-induced myocarditis and patient outcomes.
