Bank Accidentally Deposits $86 Million in Unsuspecting Woman’s Account Overnight
A client of one of Malaysia’s top banks recently experienced a jaw-dropping surprise when she discovered that her account balance had unexpectedly skyrocketed by a whopping $86 million.
In a viral LinkedIn post, Hafidzah Abdullah, the lucky account holder, shared her astonishment at this mind-boggling glitch. While she found the incident to be a memorable banking experience, she admitted that it had taken things a little too far.
“Out of a sudden, I found my personal MAYBANK account has RM 400,040,404.04, you’d think I hit the lottery, right? Well, not really – It is glitches!!!”
According to the latest exchange rates, 400,040,404.04 Malaysian ringgit is approximately $85.6 million in U.S. currency. To put this into perspective, the average monthly salary in Malaysia is around $1,485.
Abdullah expressed her frustration as the bank promptly blocked her account without any prior communication. She had to endure a lengthy process to regain access, involving a visit to the nearest Maybank branch and a customer service call.
“Now Maybank decided to block my account without any calls, message or notification at all. To unlock it, I had to visit the nearest Maybank branch & the officer had to call customer service to unblock it – which took forever & this is not my mistake!”
The New Straits Times reported that Maybank resolved the issue and assured customers that it was not a system-wide problem and no accounts were compromised.
Maybank, also known as Malayan Banking Berhad, is one of Southeast Asia’s leading financial institutions with the fourth largest assets in the region.
Interestingly, a similar incident occurred in the United States in 2019 when a couple in Pennsylvania received a $120,000 deposit in their bank account. Unlike the cautious Malaysian woman, the couple went on a shopping spree, splurging on an SUV and paying off debts. However, their spending spree came to an abrupt halt when they faced charges of theft and misusing stolen property.
Ultimately, they were ordered to repay the money, leaving them with an overdraft of $107,416.

How did Maybank respond to Abdullah’s notification of the glitch
Wrong! Initially, in my shock and excitement, I thought it was a miracle. But the optimist in me was soon overtaken by panic and anxiety,” wrote Abdullah.
Abdullah quickly reached out to Maybank, one of Malaysia’s largest banks, to notify them of the extraordinary situation. Understandably, she was concerned about the consequences she might face if the huge sum suddenly disappeared from her account.
Maybank assured Abdullah that they were aware of the error and were working to resolve it. They apologized for any inconvenience caused and urged her to be patient while they rectified the situation.
In a statement to the press, Maybank confirmed the mistake, stating that an internal glitch had resulted in the erroneous deposit into Abdullah’s account. They assured the public that the incident was an isolated case and steps were being taken to prevent any further errors of this nature.
While the exact details surrounding the glitch remain unclear, it serves as a reminder of the potential pitfalls of technology and human error in our increasingly digitized world. In an era where banking transactions are mostly carried out electronically, incidents like these are rare but not unheard of.
There have been instances in the past where individuals have suddenly found themselves millionaires due to similar banking errors. Some have even taken advantage of the situation, withdrawing or transferring funds before the mistake is rectified. However, these actions are highly unethical and illegal, and the culprits usually face severe consequences once caught.
In Abdullah’s case, she chose to act responsibly and transparently. Instead of viewing it as an opportunity to reap sudden wealth, she alerted the bank, ensuring that the error was corrected and the rightful owner of the funds properly identified.
Maybank later confirmed that the glitch had been resolved, and Abdullah’s bank balance had returned to its previous state. They thanked her for her honesty and patience throughout the ordeal.
This incident sheds light on the importance of financial institutions having robust systems and checks in place to prevent such errors from occurring. It also emphasizes the need for individuals to act responsibly and morally in similar situations.
In conclusion, although the allure of sudden wealth can be tempting, honesty and integrity should always prevail. Abdullah’s story serves as a reminder that ethically handling unexpected windfalls is not only the right thing to do, but it also protects the integrity of our financial systems.
As for Abdullah, she can rest easy knowing that she did the right thing in the face of an amazing and potentially life-changing glitch.
