Barrasso skips Senate GOP leader race, aims for No. 2 position
Only two of the so-called “three Johns” will be competing to replace Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) as leader of the Senate GOP.
Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) revealed on Tuesday that he would not join Sens. John Cornyn (R-TX) and John Thune (R-SD) in the race for the top position, and instead will vie for Republican whip, the No. 2 spot.
“I have had time to reflect on how I might best serve the Republican Conference and our country,” Barrasso said in a statement. “After a lot of thought, I will ask my colleagues for their support and help to work for them as the Assistant Republican Leader.”
Barrasso, an orthopedic surgeon-turned-lawmaker, has served in the upper chamber since 2007. He is currently the No. 3 Republican in the Senate, serving as chairman of the Senate Republican Conference.
If he were to take on the role of Republican whip, which is currently held by Thune, Barrasso would be tasked with performing head counts and rallying members of the party for votes and quorum calls.
Barrasso has endorsed former President Donald Trump in the 2024 White House race. He voted in line with Trump’s position 89.1% of the time when Trump was in office, according to FiveThirtyEight.
Leadership elections are expected to take place in November. Winners will take over their new roles in January.
McConnell, who is 82, announced his plans to step aside as GOP leader last week. “It’s time for the next generation of leadership,” he said. Still, the Kentucky Republican indicated that he plans to stay in the Senate until his term ends in early 2027.
So far, two members have expressed plans to compete for the Senate GOP leader role: Cornyn and Thune.

Other Republicans who are being talked about as potential candidates for GOP leader include Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), who ran an unsuccessful campaign in 2022 to take the leadership position from McConnell, and National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Steve Daines (R-MT).
Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) reportedly told radio host Hugh Hewitt on Tuesday that he is running to replace Barrasso as chairman of the Senate Republican conference.
– What strategic advantages does Sen. Barrasso gain by pursuing the position of Republican whip instead of Senate GOP leader?
Honor of serving as their Republican whip. I believe this role will allow me to make a significant impact on advancing our party’s agenda and promoting conservative values.”
The decision by Sen. Barrasso not to run for the top position in the Senate GOP leadership race comes as a surprise to many, considering his experience and seniority in the Senate. As the current chairman of the Senate Republican Policy Committee, Barrasso holds a prominent position within the party and has been a strong advocate for conservative policies throughout his career.
However, Barrasso’s choice to pursue the position of Republican whip instead of Senate GOP leader demonstrates his strategic thinking and ambition within the party. The role of whip is a crucial one, responsible for rallying support among party members and coordinating legislative efforts. By seeking this position, Barrasso is positioning himself as a key player in the advancement of Republican priorities.
Meanwhile, Sens. John Cornyn and John Thune are preparing for a competitive race to succeed Sen. Mitch McConnell as leader of the Senate GOP. Both senators are well-respected within the party and bring their own unique qualifications to the table.
Sen. Cornyn, a seasoned politician and lawyer, has served as the Senate Majority Whip since 2013, and prior to that, he was the Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. His expertise in navigating the complexities of legislation and his ability to build relationships with colleagues make him a formidable candidate for the leadership position.
On the other hand, Sen. Thune has a long and distinguished career in public service and has represented South Dakota in the Senate since 2005. As the Senate Majority Whip from 2009 to 2013, Thune has demonstrated his leadership abilities and has been recognized for his pragmatic approach to governance.
It remains to be seen which of the two “Johns” will emerge as the successor to Sen. McConnell. The race for the Senate GOP leadership position will undoubtedly be closely watched and heavily contested, as the outcome will have significant implications for the future direction of the Republican party.
Whoever ultimately assumes the role of Senate GOP leader will face the daunting task of unifying a party that has become increasingly divided in recent years. Balancing the interests of more moderate Republicans with the demands of staunch conservatives will require strong leadership and astute political maneuvering.
Furthermore, the next Senate GOP leader will have to navigate the numerous challenges facing the party, including policy disagreements, attracting and retaining a diverse voter base, and responding to a changing political landscape.
While Sen. Barrasso has made his decision not to compete for the top position in the Senate GOP leadership race, his role as Republican whip will undoubtedly be crucial in supporting and advancing the party’s agenda. As the Republican party moves forward, it is essential that its members work together to maintain a strong and unified front.
The outcome of the Senate GOP leadership race will undoubtedly shape the future of the Republican party and its ability to effectively govern. Only time will tell which of the ”three Johns” will emerge as the leader, but one thing is clear – the race for Senate GOP leadership will be closely watched and highly consequential.
